I am in BAKEWELL today and just screeched at my friend when I saw the Roly’s store. “It’s only fudge Rita” she says. I have never witnessed one before so had to buy some. It is really rather lovely as is Bakewell itself.

@Rachey

Ooh what flavour did you buy? And were they friendly?

@Rachey
Ooh you’re just down the road from me :o

Christmas pudding flavour and it is delicious. The guy that served me was lovely. Looks quite small compared to the pictures I saw of your shop.
I've only seen Rachey's shop on Instagram, but it does seem quite large to me compared to others I've been in. The ones in Bath and Salisbury particularly are tiny.

No way! Is this where you are from? I was staying in Buxton and went to Chatsworth House yesterday and to the Christmas markets. It was beautiful when I arrived on Friday. It felt like I was in a snow globe! Such a beautiful part of the World. I have a friend in Buxton so was at a loose end and it was lovely although all very last minute. I am heading back to Scotland now for a week or so.

She must have posted them on here at one point? I am sure I seen pictures at some point. 🤔

The way that I feel absolutely wiped today. I can tell I haven't had proper time off (weekends aside) since July. :zombie:

And no more weekends until Christmas :D

Yes Chatsworth is lovely! I’m about a 30 minute or so drive away from Bakewell, not been there for over a year but yes it’s gorgeous!

Yeah Bakewell is tiny, most of them are actually.

We're on our 5th batch of Christmas pudding so far. It's super popular.

Liverpool is big. But I think that's the only other one. I don't know how the smaller shops cope with space.

My shop is a beauty, as is our shop vehicle :disco:

Why is it, despite having Netflix, Amazon Prime, hayu and some Freeview channels, any movie I want to watch is still not available :angry:

At almost 12 years with Mr Ag I've just realised he can read music and play the piano.

He's getting a fucking keyboard for Christmas. That boy needs a hobby.

I'm not sure how a lot cope with the rent! They always seem to be in locations where the rent would be huge. In Wells and Salisbury they have prime spots next to the cathedrals, in Bath very near the Abbey, Roman Baths and on the main shopping street, in Torquay and Ilfracombe right on the harbours. I think it's only Exmouth of the ones I've visited where I was (relatively) underwhelmed by the location.

Yeah Exmouth is a really poor location. Apparently Newquay isn't great either.

I know Baths rent is close to £40k. I genuinely don't know how they cope, they must have a huge amount of footfall to cover that.

Add in Plymouth at the Barbican, and I think that's all the Roly's i have visited.

Oh, plus Brighton in the Laines, which was i think the very first i went to.

Are many of the stores seasonal, @Rachey? I recall that Ilfracombe is, which doesn't surprise me, and I'm sure a lot of those Cornish ones must struggle for customers during winter.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bath is their busiest store. Or if they make more £££ now than any other time of year.

Yeah Ilfracombe close after Christmas until Easter I think. But I believe all the others stay open all year, although I think the seaside ones close in January like we do.

Actually York is the busiest. Bath was struggling a while ago.

I didn't look that far up the map. But yes, i imagine York would be similar to Bath in terms of tourism. The footfall in Bath will be insane. But I guess if the rent is that high, you need to shift ridiculous amounts to make it work.

Exactly. And the more you sell, the more your staffing, electric and ingredients costs are. So I think there's a really thin line between taking enough to make a profit, and having too higher costs.

I actually picked up a tin of condensed milk this week solely for the purpose of making fudge. Can't decide if I'm going to do dark chocolate and amaretto, or lemon meringue and white chocolate.

Oooh dark chocolate and amaretto!
Or thinking about it, cherry and amaretto - if i can get some nice maraschino cherries.

Perhaps i could make that and coat it in dark chocolate, although I'm getting close to thinking that'll be too much effort.

That sounds amazing 🤩 we use freeze dried cherries. I like the sour taste against the sweet

I didn't consider freeze dried - I was just thinking that if I get maraschino ones, I can also use the syrup in cocktails I'm also making for Christmas presents.

I wish I had friends like you :(
