I can relate, never been enthusiastic about city life either. And i feel the value of what it has to give in comparison to what we're missing is very often exaggerated.

Every day starts glorious and then all of the sudden it rains for a while and then it feels hot and wet. Maybe the climate is turning tropical.

So, turns out the heat can affect cats diabetes as well as pretty much every other thing in the world.
We did a spot check on Heathcliff yesterday before injecting him and he was far lower than he should be, so we've had to adjust his insulin dose and hope it works. And we narrowly avoided another hypo.


Also, people with cats that eat wet food, how do you stop the flies in the summer I've never fed wet food until recently.

In the morning i serve half (the quantity that i know they'll surely eat in one go) then i clean the bowl. Then cover the remaining wet food in nylon wrap and keep in the fridge so that it doesn't go bad and serve the remaining in the evening.

I've been serving less, and then setting a timer with a freezer block in for a few hours later, but Heathcliffs an annoying cat, he always leaves a bit in the bowl even if I reduce the food. So it's always attracting flies. I'm tempted to remove wet food altogether and just keep him on dry but I think that may affect his diabetes.

When Mr L was working from home, he just put very small amounts down throughout the day.

Now he's mostly back in the office, they just don't have wet food in the morning at all, so it isn't left out all day.

They probably have about 75% dry food anyway. One of them won't eat wet food at all, and the other two don't seem to have a strong preference either way.

I wish heathcliff was like that it takes him 4 hours to finish one small sachet. And he only eats it if I put it out in 1 mouthful sections

I've swapped the city for the middle of rural nowhere temporarily, and while I'm loving being able to traipse up hills, down towpaths, and around fancy country houses, I already miss reliable public transport, and I know winter would be terrible. There's nothing to do indoors here except go to the straight people pub.

Why is that? I thought on the whole dry food was more healthy. But then I've read and heard conflicting info for and against both.

Dry food is really high in carbs, which makes their blood sugar go up. Ideally he should be on the lowest carb food possible, which is something like Sheba fine flakes which he's on, but not liking in this heat.

He's on a special dry food for diabetes which should keep his blood glucose stable, but it still raises it.

It's really confusing. The vets are very pro prescription food, wet or dry, but the owners of diabetic cats who test daily are pro low carb wet.

We're very much still contemplating retirement options, but I know I wouldn't want to have spent my life until now at least anywhere other than a reasonable (at least) sized city.
