I'm handing back my DIY-champion badge due to how long it's taken me to put a petrol mower together. It's not rocket-science and thanks to the worst assembly instructions I've ever had the misfortune to read I've put parts on back to front and the wrong way around and had to dismantle and redo so many times. I think it's done now though and all I need to do is put oil in it, sort the recoil cable out then go to the peccy station for a couple of litres of unleaded. After that I can do my online review about how the instruction manual is as much use as a chocolate fireguard but their customer service helpline is exemplary.
Now, can I be arsed walking down to the petrol station or should I just put the empty can in the boot and get it on the way to work one morning this week?

What's the advantage of a petrol one over electric? I think we're going to need to get a new one and have only had electric. But we do only have a small lawned area, relatively flat and I assume easy to mow. Not that I've ever done it myself.

I had a larger garden when we lived darn sarf so the petrol mower was ideal. Unlike electric you can use them when the grass is still damp or is longer and they are a lot more sturdy, plus there's the added bonus of not worrying about running over the wire tethering you to the house. I always have self-propelled because you just pull a lever and the mower moves itself forward so no hard pushing, you just follow along behind it. As they're mechanical rather than electrical they're easier to maintain and mend once you know where the spark plug and air filters are and you can even sharpen the blade yourself with a whetstone if you feel that way inclined (obviously I did). After I changed the oil for the first time in the old mower (it was over 20 years old) is when it died, lawnmower repair man said it happens a lot and wasn't worth trying to mend due to its age, so I replaced it with an electric one that did two cuts then went into the shed for the winter. First time it was used last year the motor burned out after cutting half of the front grass, obviously just after the warranty had ended, which pissed me off no end as it had cost about 65 quid per cut. I then borrowed my mum's cordless Flymo to do the other half but it didn't have the oomph to do a good job. Because it rains so much oop north our grass is only completely dry at the height of summer during a severe drought.
In conclusion, if you've been happy with electric all these years go for electric again, petrol is just better for my slightly-uneven, slightly-damp garden. My new engine is a tenth the capacity of my car engine so I'm expecting good things from it.
