Sunday Says Hallelujah Anyway

Happy Mother's Day, moopy mummies.

I'll be seeing my mum later, as I do every Sunday. I'll be making a chicken casserole, and enjoying the tradition of giving her a cardigan that she'll initially pretend to love today, but by next week will have decided the colour/zip/buttons aren't quite right, and I'll have to take it back to M&S.

This is why we don't do presents. I usually get to choose a plant from the garden centre but we did that week anyway. So a bottle of fizz is perfect.

My first motherless Mother's Day. It really does feel like it’s everywhere and unavoidable. Still, got out early, walked the length of the seafront with a coffee and stopped where I scattered some of my Mum’s ashes. Had a little cry (which I really needed). The sun decided to shine right over the exact spot at just the right time as I arrived (I know as I made sure to scatter in line with a lifesaving ring stand on the beach). It clouded over when I left too. Just perfect.

Did you get any of the 'would you prefer to opt out of receiving Mother's Day emails' emails?

Somehow that seems even worse than receiving them. Well, when I get the equivalent for Father's Day, even 20+ years on. It feels a lot more 'oh yes, you don't have one, do you?'

I know! It really does.

It is strange- although I always celebrated Mother’s Day, it wasn’t something I attached much importance to to be honest, and I confess I was a bit “oh, get over it” about the “would you like to opt out” stuff, but fuck me, when it’s everywhere and things are still raw, it really is horrible. And it just seems to follow me. Went out for dinner on Wednesday and they literally sat me in front of the only Mother’s Day banner in the entire place. :D :(

And as I speak, Mr Sheena has popped on Elaine Paige on Sunday with a song called “Mother Knows Best” and Elaine banging on about MD! :D

The one from Tangled? Which is a villain song by a controlling mother who is set on ruining her daughter’s life? How appropriate for the day. :D

She did joke about that…but yes.

And you know what makes it all the worse….? That you have to opt out year after year.

There should be an option to opt out forever. She’s dead love.

You do? That’s fucking appalling!

I tried to opt out of those but more because I'll opt out of being sent any old shit that I can rather than it being particularly painful

My mother's ashes are still awaiting their fate THREE YEARS LATER :argh:

Depending on your email provider, you could add a filter to instantly delete emails containing the phrase "mother's day" and stuff like that

Going for a generic meal at my mum's later. She really doesn't care to celebrate anything. She literally had us over for a pizza for her 70th.

My mother-in-law might be a pain in the arse, but at least she's not scared of throwing a party.

It's funny, I don't get the opt-out e-mails any more or, at least, I didn't get any this year and only Etsy got through. But that took several years and my mother died before there was any such thing as e-mailing lists!

Yeah, it's terrible. None of the opt-outs that I had over the years asked for a reason and everyone is so scared of missing a single sale that the assumption seems to be that you'd just fallen out and weren't talking that year. This is the first year I haven't had one from Tesco since they started sending them so their algorithm must have finally tipped over from 'sulking' to 'estranged' to 'ded'.

It was a particularly hard one for my mum this year as this is/would have been her wedding anniversary, 57 years. We had a laugh though, I think I managed to cheer her up for a couple of hours and she's off on holiday with spawn and grandspawn in the morning.

On the plus side we're looking after kittens for a week and will be there when I return!

Good evening my darlings.

I had a FaceTime with Shannon and Caleb this morning. We went out for a pre planned family meal with my beautiful mam, son and all my siblings and husbands, wives and kids. This is quite the task as we had 36 of us but after we all sat down and were ordering drinks Shanno walked in with baby Caleb. Was my first Mothers Day without seeing her in all her 24 years and my first being a Nonna so it has been very emotional, and fantastic day, I have my baby and her baby over in Ireland with us for a few days. 💚

So today was kinda half good and half bad with the mother, she still keeps saying she will go to the doctors about her memory problems but she has been saying it for like 6 months so it's obvious she has no intention of doing it. We did get into an argument and she went for me and not for the first time either and I stepped back and walked out. All I am trying to do is fucking help! Her dad had dementia so I completely understand it from her side and that she is scared etc, but all I want is for her to go for an appointment. She is quite happy to go about other things like her neck problems. But this can't go on

The best kind of surprise!

I can sympathise, we went through this with my father, he only agreed to see a neurologist once my mother had passed. It was so frustrating.
