Do you want tags to return?

Also I know this has come up a few times, but mods standing for election - it would be good to know your stance on this. It doesn’t seem like you’ve all voted in the above poll?

I did find some tags funny, but it was never a big part of Moopy for me. I think Moopy has been so much fun over the past few weeks, and we haven't had tags. If they can genuinely be policed, then fine, but I've yet to be convinced that's really possible.

The irony of this fundamentally being an unmoderated space in which we can call each other cunts and throw around hate speech as we please (as long as it’s in accord with the Moopy Way) and this fuss about not wanting snarky tags back is obviously lost on some of you.
Talk about blithely minimising what's been said in the thread. "Snarky tags"? I'm glad you haven't felt what I and others have. At its worst we're talking about targeted, cowardly bullying and there shouldn't be an avenue for it. I'm okay dealing with people calling me what they want if they're prepared to stand behind it.

People shouldn't have to threaten to leave to get their voices listened to. I'd like to have them back, but I think it would need to be an overwhelming majority rather than just by one or two people. I'd be asking the yes voters to come up with a plan which makes the people who have been hurt comfortable with turning them back on. That sort of plan may not be possible, but that's who I'm listening to right now.

Rather than a "Yes, if" I think I am going to go for a "No, unless". I think there probably is something that can be done that would suit enough people, but until that is presented I think in a simple Yes/No, then it has to be no.

But we DO! (I certainly have over the last 11 years.) Calling someone a cunt is, whether we agree with it or not, surely defined as hate speech. Personally it’s one of my favourite words because of its power and attack, but one of my first posts (which included it) when we moved to XenForo was flagged up as hate speech and I got a pop-up message about it. Luckily the police were very understanding :(

I’ve never been the victim of malicious tagging but I’d rather someone had the decency to call me a cunt et al. openly than via a snarky tag. If you have something to say, then say it and own it.

The problem is a number of posters didn’t have the balls to do so and went down the anonymous route instead.

I'm glad we got a good solid debate to close the day for what it's worth. I've gotten used to the bags under my eyes from posting here obsessively and today wasn't bringing it.

I don’t think it’s a simple thing as having a vote and the one with the most votes wins. It is practically 50/50 so whatever happens half of Moopy is going to be upset by it. I think for any sort of change now there has to be a significant majority to bring back.

we got rid of tags because it became apparent that it was quite difficult for the Indie to get it to work the exact way we wanted and it became a massive headache.

sure some tags are fun but I just think we might have moved on a bit and with them back it’s just an extra thing to police. If we were to bring them back we need at least two additional mods to help with things. I’m just not convinced that the good outweighs the bad in this case. I

Yes, and that’s why I’m saying they should be called out and dealt with! The avenue shouldn’t be removed just because some people don’t know how to behave appropriately.

Also, do you not think that there’s historically been targeted, cowardly bullying on here in actual posts for many years now? What’s the difference?

Or there's just a point to be made that the forum is vibrant enough without bringing back something that isn't needed? People are certainly happy enough to post...
Will that continue once the pandemic is over though?

Wasn't dub one of the most vocal people in saying that open bullying had taken place in the last tags thread? Particularly with regards to one person?

And it does no doubt, though it's certainly decreased massively since addressed. I do however think that tags gave those people a greater platform.

Because at least then the aggressor has to answer for it rather than hide behind anonymity.

After SOME THOUGHT I’ve changed back to no.

Very much agree with Zen’s “No, unless” stance.

But posting was already down before the pandemic when tags were the same as always. Do you think bringing back tags would affect that?
I think if we go back to how it was AND without tags, we will pretty much die a death.

I can't believe this is all happening again. Just the same as it was 6 months ago, less than that in fact. We were doing FINE.

Fuck this. I'm off to bed.

Honestly I'm OUT.

BAN ME before I have to read any more of the WET DRIVEL.

Oh don't! Maybe people just need more time. UGH.

In all honesty, I don't think it's time that is needed to be able to bring back tags. It's civility and a sense of, if not comradeship, at least RESPECT among a fairly small group of people that goes out of the window for a cheap laugh (when it's not downright bullying) on many occasions.

I’m not anti-tag to be honest - I’ll go with the majority whatever. I was never an avid user and that won’t change if they come back.

Make them public if it is easier. The moderation thing is worth exploring if they are brought back - whether or not the mods/admin want to play babysitter is another thing. I’m all for temp and permanent bans if there is clear bullying/discrimination going on.

I think that how this thread has descended has kinda proven that tags are not appropriate for right now, at least. We’ve all been living mostly harmoniously over the past 6 months. Let’s keep it that way.

Oh COME ON. How much more anonymous can we get with a pretend name and a picture of something totally unrelated to who we actually are? Obviously a lot of you know each other IRL which makes a difference, but even so.

Also, let’s not pretend that certain people on here aren’t quite happy to say nothing when they’re attacked in posts - or worse, play along - for fear of being attacked or demonised in return.

Tags were one of the funniest thing that moopy ever had. I’ve proper cackled over them in the past. But moopy has evolved into something very inclusive in the last few years and tags unfortunately encourage

1) online bullying
2) in jokes and running jokes, which make it harder for newer and more passive users to integrate.

so I’d reluctantly say no

Well, the vote seems pretty decisive right now (62% no)

If it remains like that, can we at least have some agreement to drop it for a while? :eyes:
