Taylor Swift - Midnights (new album out Oct. 21)

this has unexpectedly crept up on me and after being fairly unbothered I now like it VERY much.. it took about 5 listens for it to unfold properly

today's grower is Mastermind. a low-key closing track but I love the bouncy beat in the background and lyrically it's a winner.

"Hits Different" is a breezy delight. I do get the 1989 vibes - "How You Get the Girl" specifically.

it is. 9.0 for Red and 8.5 for Red TV (lol). then 8.0 for folklore, 7.9 for evermore and 7.7 for 1989.

HD raised their prediction to 1.4-1.6 million first week in the US.

and the album did 99m on its second day on Spotify.

at this point she has commercially surpassed Madonna. :o

UGH why is there two different albums and which one am I suppose to listen to

Wow, is it just me or does this album start off promising and then fall off a MASSIVE cliff?

Bejeweled
Labyrinth
Mastermind

all really good. she's really comfortable with loose songwriting and very wordy melodies now. it's a more Lana like approach that feels a bit "not pop".

So I swear
I'm only cryptic and Machiavellian cos I care

so it's interesting that she's breaking records and the streams are so shit hot. I'm curious to see if it has a life and if Anti Hero can become a proper chart hit, not just a Spotify slow burn

Today’s revelation is “The Great War”. The devastation in her voice in the middle eight hits hard. :(

Somewhere in the haze
Got the sense I’ve been betrayed

Caved in.

HMV surprisingly short on CDs, racks almost empty...ended up with the Mahogany because they were all out of Jade.

I'm up to Snow On The Beach and I like the overall sound...already feels like it needs a few spins to sink in which is a good thing.

First minute or so of "Question...?" I was like, hmm, this one's a bit shit but by the end I was bopping. Good trick.

"Vigilante Shit" is either completely brilliant or a demo that should have been left in the bin. I'll come back to you.

So, the 'problem' is Antonoff's production. His beats are a bit leaden and dull. The mix pushes Swift back a bit too much in places too, especially 'Labyrinth'.

this is absolutely brilliant. it's so deliciously tacky, but in a very knowing way that totally works. unlike the CGI disaster fests of videos like Sweetest Pie and Cardi's last few. who directed?

gagging at Dita, Laura Dern and the House of the Dragon closing shot :D

Bejeweled is very Gorgeous meets London Boy, probably the most reputation/lover song on here. it's a serious grower.

can we give it its own thread starting with the video in POP's post? @Moderator

current best to worst, with the caveat that various songs are growing on me immensely with each play - today it's Labyrinth and Karma

11 Maroon
10 Anti-Hero
10 You're on Your Own, Kid
09 Labyrinth
08.5 Mastermind
08.5 Bejeweled
08.5 Karma
08 Snow on the Beach
08 Sweet Nothing
07.5 Midnight Rain
07 Lavender Haze
06.5 Vigilante Shit
06 Question...?

Lavender Haze is such a weird non-event of an opening track. Sweet Nothing is just lovely.
