Taylor Swift - Midnights (new album out Oct. 21) (1 Viewer)

the leaked lyrics from Karma are...

You talkin’ **** for the hell of it
Addicted to betrayal, but you’re relevant
You’re terrified to look down
‘Cause if you dare, you’ll see the glare
Of everyone you burned just to get there
It’s coming back around

Pre Chorus

And I keep my side of the street clean
You wouldn’t know what I mean

Chorus

‘Cause karma is my boyfriend, karma is a god
Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend
Karma’s a relaxing thought
but for you, it’s not, sweet like honey
Karma is a cat, purring in my lap ‘cause it loves me
Flexing like a Goddamn acrobat
Me and karma vibe like that

Verse 2

Spidеr boy, king of thieves
Weavе your little webs of opacity
My pennies made your crown
Trick me once, trick me twice
Don’t you know that cash ain’t the only price
It’s coming back around

Pre Chorus

And I keep my side of the street clean
You wouldn’t know what I mean

Chorus

‘Cause karma is my boyfriend, karma is a god
Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend
Karma’s a relaxing thought
but for you, it’s not, sweet like honey
Karma is a cat, purring in my lap ‘cause it loves me
Flexing like a Goddamn acrobat
Me and karma vibe like that

Bridge

Ask me what I’ve learned from all those years
Ask me what I earned from all those tears
Ask me why so many, when I’m still here [I’m still here
‘Cause karma is the thunder, rattling your ground
Karma’s on your scent like a bounty hunter
Karma’s gonna track you down
Step by step, from town to town
Sweet like justice, karma is a queen
Karma takes all my friends to the summit
Karma is the guy on the screen
Comin’ straight home to me [Woo]

I...

"Lavender Haze" has serious Lover vibes. Bouncy and fun, a bit of a bop.

Get it off your chest... get it off my desk! Ooh Ooh Ooh!

"Anti-hero" was a bit meh on the first listen but put it on repeat and it's a hit, I think.

"Snow on the Beach" is giving me chills (heard the leak yesterday and again today). It's the best track so far. "Mirrorball" vibes but make it festive. Disappointed Lana isn't at the forefront but you can tell she co-wrote it.

The second half of "You're on Your Own, Kid" is a bit... "Out of the Woods" :o @Jark It's very good

From sprinkler splashes
To fireplace ashes
I gave my blood sweat and tears for this

I hosted parties
And starved my body
Like I'd be saved by a perfect kiss

The jokes weren't funny
I took the money
My friends from home don't know what to say

I looked around in a blood soaked gown
And I saw something

They can't take away

Oh tay. THIS needs to be a single.

"Midnight Rain" is very reputation. Delicious production. Not sure if I hear much of a melody yet.

"Question..." is cuuuuute. Another potential single I think.

"Vigilante Shit" is TERRIBLE. :D

"Look What You Made Me Do" wasn't good the first time!

"Bejeweled" is another reputation / lover moment. But I like the production, juvenile but fun.

Shit lyrics aside, "Karma" is a bawp.

KARMA is CAT
Purring in my LAP!

Preliminary Rank

1. You're on Your Own, Kid
2. Snow on the Beach
3. Labyrinth
4. Lavender Haze
5. Question...
6. Anti-hero
7. Karma
8. Maroon
9. Midnight Rain
10. Bejeweled
11. Mastermind
12. Sweet Nothing
13. Vigilante Shit

It's definitely reputation p. 2. not that that's a bad thing but surprised she went back in that direction after seeing how devastated she was about its reception in Miss Americana.

I'm assuming this album has been made to be toured then. A snappy pop(ish) album, by the sounds of it.

Halfway through and Snow On The Beach and Question...? are best so far. Vigilante Shit is well... shit

I listened in full in bed with no distractions this morning.

first five tracks are brilliant. her best opening run besides folklore. Maroon is gorgeous. Anti-Hero is the one! such a catchy, effortless hook. it's me, hi. I'm the problem, it's me!

Snow on the Beach good, but crediting Lana feels like a cruel joke. Midnight Rain is a bit interludey but I enjoyed.

Question...? and Vigilante Shit are both dreadful. what was she thinking. Question...? in particular, and that line about kissing in a crowded room and people clapping, belongs in the bin. Vigilante is a bit better but Jack being hung up on trap drum patterns in 2022 is sad.

Bejeweled is a sparkly bop. Labyrinth pleasant filler. Karma is a good song and could do well on radio but... hunny, those lyrics. enough is enough!

the last two passed me by, and sonically the album is seriously blurring at this point.

FIRST LISTEN SNAP VERDICT

- strong opening run of songs
- liking the general soundscape
- but not enough variety
- a non-essential Taylor Swift album
- BUT BETTER THAN LOVER
- "everybody is a sexy baby"
- lyrically this is a real mixed bag
- wants to be folklore/evermore: pop version, but it's only half successful
- 7/10
