Taylor Swift vs Netflix

Is she mad cuz the joke is sexist? Or because it's about her? Cuz one line from one show doesn't make an entire streaming service "degrading". I've never heard of the show and she doesn't provide ANY context. Was the scene trying to slut-shame women? Or was it just a scene about a sexist person? And the reference to HER OWN documentary just makes her sound like her usual self-indulgent self.
 
How thin skinned is she? Worse than you know who.
 
Interesting one. I've no idea of context and what this show is about so it's hard to judge how damaging it is. Would it have worked with a man? Probably. Did they use it because she is an easy target? Most likely.

It probably depends on what the implications of the joke in the scene are - are they trying to paint someone as a voracious slutty whore or is it about someone who changes boyfriends regularly because, for example, they get itchy feet or they have some sort of DRAMA that mirrors some of the stuff she reflects in her songs? There are degrees to all of this in which the joke would be acceptable, in my opinion.

Apparently she has published a documentary on Netflix about slut-shaming so I guess this is PERSONAL with the NETWORK.
 
It’s a shit joke, but there’s no way she’d be speaking if it was about someone else and not her. Imagine if it was a dated joke about how Elizabeth Taylor goes through husbands.

Understandably annoyed at being the butt of a joke but OMG, it’s not like it slanders her. Grow a thicker skin and write a song about it or something.
 
It’s an unfunny joke, but we should just stop watching/streaming things we don’t care for rather than trying to make Netflix responsible for all its content cause that is quite absurd.
 
In addition I’m sure the writer/actor/whoever else was involved is now getting doxxed to high heaven by her fans.

It’s a shitty joke but talk about punching down, just call Ted Sarandos and yell at him if you’re pissed at Netflix. You can do it.

it wasn't about slut shaming by any means. it did cover a lot of the negative press she received including the headlines about her celebrity relationships however.

the joke is shit and she's overreacting. but who are we to say calm down love when she's had to endure a whole decade-plus of judgment for her relationship choices? I'd be SICK OF IT TOO.
 
its not a good joke but people would make jokes like this, so being a part of a SCRIPT is not condoning it really is it.

That's almost giving her too much credit. She's the kind of girl who knows what she's doing. I don't for a second believe that she's not doing this at least partially for brownie points from her fans and the media.
 
What she's done is give the show huge publicity. It's in my 'watch list' actually and reminded me I need to start it.

Yes but the problem is she's employing very faulty logic. A joke/insult directed at YOU personally does not mean it was also directed at the rest of your group/party etc. The joke was about HER. There's no proof that the show was being sexist. But maybe it was, I dunno.
But again, she's no stranger to this kinda virtue signalling.

If she actually HAD an argument she would've posted the scene the joke comes from. She would've provided context. Is the scene trying to "degrade" women? Or is the scene simply about a person who says a mean Taylor Swift joke? Even the screenshot she posted is a BLACK SCREEN :D

But how is this Netflix’s fault? They give the show a budget and platform, sure, but it’s not as if they write the shitty script? (Or do they idk??)

I’m sure they can edit that line out of the show as a gesture /PR move similar to how the Saved by the Bell reboot took out that Selena Gomez line when it got bad press.
 
I think it's fair game for her to react, but there's also an element of trying to pass this off as a rally for the sisterhood when perhaps she should be a bit more honest about it and just say she's sick and tired of the joke.

Usually Netflix/Amazon work very closely with the producers on their original content and it all gets carefully reviewed and edited by them, so I don't think they can be totally dissociated. I also think they'll probably take the line out which seems like the sensible thing to do
 
I think she's right to call it out. We're moving towards a point where it's not okay to "pick on" celebrities even as a joke on the basis that yeah they're rich and chose this life but they're still people. I've definitely changed the way I think about the whole thing over the past year and hope I'd be less likely to 'belittle' celebrities for a cheap laugh. I still do it I think but it's on a trajectory going the right way
 
I absolutely agree with @Iguana and am amazed our supposedly woke new Moopy doesn't think the same, to be honest. She had a documentary on Netflix which LITERALLY talked about the shame, depression and horror she felt when people said all of this. I don't see what the issue is with calling it out at all and, in fact, I applaud her for doing so. Fuck being silent, she doesn't have to be.

If it’s something that bothers her, and I’m sure she’s heard this over the years many times, why shouldn’t she speak up? Aren’t we supposed to say “I don’t like this so please stop” in this day and age? Sorry for the generalisation but I do think if it was a lot of other people not named Taylor Swift challenging the same remark about themselves they would receive more support.

When I’ve read about some of the things she’s said and some of the causes she has supported both verbally and financially she always comes across as a decent person to me.
 
Yeah I’m with her on this. Maybe there’s a bit of reach with the conclusions jumped to (I haven’t seen it so I don’t know), but ultimately I’m fairly happy if someone is feeling this way to speak up. Even if someone disagrees, at least the conversation is being had which means we are at least acknowledging the impact things like this can have on people, celebrity or not.
 
At first I thought she was overreacting, but if people were constantly making jokes about me, that were somewhat prejudiced, about things that happened over a decade ago, I would also be annoyed/angry about it
 
To be perfectly honest her previous string of boyfriends and the Kanye West incident has made her infamous. Wasn’t Shake It Off about all the “haters”?

I can probably name about 5 of her songs at most and they’re all about her boyfriends and the press. If it wasn’t for that she’d probably not be as well known outside of current pop fans.
 
Whether she’s right or not does it matter? If the line offends her then she has a right to say so, especially as it’s about her. Nobody has to be cancelled or anything but she’s allowed to be upset about it.

For me the line with comedy will always be about intention and whether you are trying to punch up or down. A lot of jokes are based on assumptions and stereotyping, and there's always some truth in that, but it's whether you are bringing the person/peoples you are laughing about with you or not. I think that particular line, without any other context, is QUITE NEUTRAL considering who she is and, in my limited knowledge of her, how she was quite happy to trade on heartbreaks and boys to feed the machine until they started to reduce her to that punchline. Whether she likes it or not, she's famous for having a string of high-profile boyfriends and then writing songs about them, even I as a CASUAL LISTENER know that!

If she has taken objection to it, that's her prerogative. And if this is a common joke now in America or shorthand for PROMISCUITY (that has largely passed me by) then I can see why she'd be PISSY about it. But it's hardly a DEFAMATION CASE or a #BEKIND, and I'm sorry but her SISTERHOOD CLAIMS ring a bit hollow, didn't she have an ongoing feud with Katy Perry about BACK-UP DANCERS or something equally silly for YEARS, even writing a DISS TRACK about it?
