On paper, Draper loses in the semi, but if Medvedev/Sinner goes to 5 sets I think he has a chance. He's not droped a set and spent less time on court this tournament than any of the others left.

Interesting that he's not gone past the second round at Wimbledon yet, but then he did draw Djokovic and Nadal in 2 of the last 3 times he's played there so tough draws.
 
Ugh, Igaaaa. Farting a billion errors to QF specialist Pegula of all people smh. Not sure why she struggles to translate her tour form into the Slams so frequently.

I struggle with Sabs. I have Belarusian friends who were effectively exiled during the protests in 2021. Her support for Lukashenko back then rubs me the wrong way. I should be more willing to give her a free pass due to relative youth (and also how many sportspeople are known for taking conscious stands against their leaders? Sinner was happily cavorting with Meloni after his AO win, after all...) but, like I say, I struggle. And while grunting rarely bothers me for the most part - I actually find it more egregious on the men's side with all the delayed grunts you get inc from golden boy Carlitos - Aryna legit sounds like the berserk lovechild of Seles and Sharapova, bleurgh. Having said that, her game at its imperious best can be reminiscent of those ladies in its fearlessness and power which is :disco:, and she's a fun personality. She seems the safest bet now and I'm not against her winning, but I reckon Pegula and esp Muchova have shots at the upset. Now watch Emma Navarro win the whole thing. :rolleyes:

Hooray for my mate Jack! I only caught glimpses of Sinner/Medvedev, but the fact that they didn't kill each other will make Draper's task harder. He should have plenty in the tank, though, and he knows Sinner + his game well enough. I've been casually supporting both these guys for years but I'm a bit more ambivalent about them after August. Regardless, I want the winner of the men's to come from that side of the draw because if I have to put up with hearing any more American coaches obnoxiously bellowing "LET'S GOOO!!!" / "YOU GOT THIS" / [insert generic motivational phrase] between every damn point I will catch the next flight to NYC and wallop them myself UGH!
 
Muchova is playing so well but I want Sabalenka to win just to keep the four slams this year shared amongst existing slam champions. I’m not a Sabalenka fan for sure, but she’s in a very tricky position as one of Belarus’ most famous athletes.

Similarly on the men’s side I’d like Sinner to win so that he and Alcaraz hold 2 each for the year, it would be kind of symbolic.

I’m more invested now in Shuai Zhang and Kristina Mladenovic’s surge to the women’s doubles final. Ridiculous that Zhang is on the longest losing streak in WTA history (Mladenovic also has one of the previous longest streaks) but finds herself in a grand slam doubles final playing very well.

Coco has been in horrible form this summer, it'd be a shock if she played according to seed. Iga will have her hands full with Andreeva and maybe Collins in R16/QF, and I think she's running on a depleted tank mentally and physically. Aryna looked great in Cincy and for me, she's going in as the clear favourite.

Replace Collins with Pegula but this is all holding up very well.

I completely agree with @BoysForSeles - Muchova is playing tremendously well and I love watching her play, but I'd prefer that Sabalenka roll through this and keep the slam ship somewhat steady even if I'm not a big fan.

Draper lost to Djokovic in 21 and De Minaur in 22 and this year to Norrie at Wimbledon, he's only played Nadal at the US Open. :david:

Zhang has had a bizarre career. Her intermittent singles career has been a bit catastrophic lately, she starts off strong but often ends up falling apart after the first set.

I'm intrigued by the mixed doubles final featuring Donald Young who had all but retired to play pickle ball, playing with Taylor Townsend who he'll be coaching after retiring.
 
the second set of this Draper Sinner match is some of the WORST tennis I've seen all year. and it's lasted about SEVEN HOURS

game on though if Jack can clinch this set
 
also having mics on the player boxes is a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE MISDEED. I want Draper's coach DEAD!
 
Mika Stojsavljevic just won the Junior Girls single title at the US Open. Should be a good stepping-stone for her senior career. Hopefully she can be allowed to develop at her own pace like Jack and Henry appear to have.

We have three girls in the top 5 of Under 17s on the WTA tour with her, Mingge Xu and Hannah Klugman. Hope they can all push each other up into the top100 in the next 2 years.


Hoping for a Fritz win tonight mostly to stop everyone saying that Sinner is the second coming. He's got 1 slam to his name! ONE!!
 
I'd also love for Taylor Fritz to snatch the win. I feel like he deserves it for doing the Lord's work at two consecutive slams.

Hardly murdered?! Fritz had actually more sets against Sinner than Sinner has against him, coming into this match. They’re much more evenly matched than people are giving him credit.

Second set much closer. Come on Fritz!

Presumably Tsitsi/Zverev/Wawrinka were unavailable or unwilling cos I can't for the life of me understand why Rune is there instead.

I’m not sure it’s to do with the Olympics disappointment, that was more the reason he continued this year rather than calling it last year. End of part of an iconic era but the men are lucky to have Alcaraz and Sinner already playing so well and connecting with fans as the big name retirements are happening. The void after Serena left seemed so much bigger on the women’s side.

Book was very heavy but very good and important, especially when you see that this is still something that's pretty ripe in tennis in 2024, just look at some of the more recent Slam champions.
 
I am losing interest in the men's side. Not helped by the fact I find Sinner utterly boring.
 
Oh, I'm really enjoying men's tennis in the post-'Big Three' era. The whole GOAT wars were very, very tiresome. As much as it was awesome to witness (arguably) the greatest era in the game firsthand, I'm happy that the game is finally moving on. (Well, kinda - Novak winning the Olympic Gold at last was some kinda Lazarus moment that only he could pull off. I wonder if he has many such moments left.)

Caught Sinner live last year and I said then and there that he was gonna win the next Slam (which turned out to be this year's AO). In all my years I've never seen anyone crush the ball as consistently as he does! I get that his metronomic style and quieter personality isn't really gonna put butts in seats in and of itself, but as a contrast to Alcaraz's game and flair it makes for a pretty good narrative and suggests that the ATP will continue to be solid box-office for many years to come IMO. And things can change in tennis so quickly (the whole Fed/Nadal/Djokovic triopoly is really an anomaly in the grand scheme of the sport's history), so I'm intrigued to see who steps up or steps backwards in 2025. Particularly if Sinner ends up having to serve a ban which'll leave quite the vacuum on hardcourts aka most of the tour.
 
Sinner is amazing to watch from a tennis perspective. Just like Rybakina, it's so easy and effortless and with silent precision.

I totally get that he's not a headline grabbing guy from a personality perspective.
 
One month suspension for Swiatek, which she’s pretty much served already during the Asian swing which she hates anyway.

 
All these top players and their contaminated supplements… don’t know what to believe anymore.
 
Reading the report, they (coveniently) had the receipt for the contaminated melatonin and had it tested so I guess I have to believe it.
