appropriate of him to lose on yet another dreadful overhead smash :D

Zverev the player, with his long list of achievements, probably does deserve to win a slam.

Zverev the person absolutely does not. If it had been Ruud or Tits, it would have been a great story of a player overcoming their past final demons to win one.

He's got it now, let's move on. It took avoiding Sinner/Alcaraz/Djokovic, a collapsing draw & a new finalist to do it & he still almost mucked it up. The window for multiple titles is almost certainly closed.

The bright spot of this tournament has been seeing so many good young players breaking through. It's going to be an exciting time at the top of the game if they can all keep it going & start challenging the top 2.

Call me a hater but even this I would question.

Yes, he won a Slam that has swung widely his way (basically a 250 clay draw in the second week) but there’s incredibly good reason he hasn’t won the 40 or so he entered before (regular choker, passive backboard tennis, huge gulf between him and the Top 2 / Top 3 in the world). He’s as deserving as Berdych and Ferrer as far as I’m concerned :)

He finally has his grand slam win but it'll always be tainted with a big question mark, especially if it's the only one he ever wins(very likely).

I didn't want it to happen & clearly he's a notch below the Big 3 & Sincaraz, but looking at what he's done in the game objectively - taking his repugnant personality out of it - with Olympic gold, multiple ATP finals & Masters, wins over every top player etc etc - he was clearly the best player on the tour without a slam. Yeah he's been a choker, but so was Jana Novotna - it should be a happy story seeing someone push through their demons, stop playing passively in the big moments to finally win one.

I say all this as a card carrying hater who roots against him in every match.

Still can't get over the fact the he's a grand slam winner. Jammy sod.

I'm not even that mad about it. anyone who's shown that level of consistency - four slam finals, at least one slam semi in each of his last 7 seasons, two QF or better in 6 of the last 7 seasons - does deserve to win without being considered a flash in the pan or having an asterisk next to it. he's clearly miles better than a Ferrer.

onto the next though. Wimbledon better keep it FUN and CLASSY!

genuinely excited to see which of the women steps up for Wimbledon. you'd have to think it's Sabalenka's turn... but the last 7 slams were won by 7 different women so who knows.

He's far from a flash in the pan but he was very fortunate not to have to face the two players ranked above him + Djokovic.

how many slam winners have to face the #1/2 in the world on their way to winning though?

Swiatek Wimbledon 25 -- highest ranked opponent Anisimova #13 seed
Sabalenka UO 25 -- herself the #1, highest ranked opponent Pegula #4 seed
Rybakina AO 26 -- did beat the world #1
Andreeva French 26 -- highest ranked opponent Kostyuk #15 seed

point being it's not the norm to win by beating the best in the world necessarily and there's no "okay but..." if the draw doesn't throw that up for you. it's only the dominance of Sinner/Alcaraz that's created this situation for the men.

I hate that I sound like I'm defending him!!

I was relishing the prospect that he would go on to be the best person to have played the game to have never won a grand slam particularly given his age and the arrival of more upstarts.

Stop ruining it for me.

Serena and Mboko play tomorrow in the doubles at Queen's.

I had a strange feeling watching Serena's press conference earlier - weird body language, unconvincing answers to easy questions like "why now?" (I guess I kinda just... thought why not...)

she said she was taking it slow with no immediate plans to play singles and I guess we'll see how she looks on court in doubles. but the fact that even Venus said on TV she hadn't seen Serena playing/didn't know she was training... and the fact that her weight loss drugs keep being raised as a topic... all just feels weird? like it's something she's walking into a bit arrogantly with no real preparation. IDK.

She's NOT going to play the singles. I'll say it now. Theres no way I see that happening.

Roger is set to make a return to the US open this year. But don't think he's playing the singles.

Love Roger more than life but not here for the gimmicky US Open doubles.

Emma Raducanu beats Blinkova 6-0 6-3 for her first win in 3 months :disco: could be playing Cirstea in the next round. also on court with Boulter in doubles later.

I hadn’t realised Queen’s had started ‘til I was changing channels just now and happened on it. So great to see the start of the all-too-short grass court season! Love it!

It's the ladies' tournament. I'm not sure I can adjust to the change in the timetable tbh.

ok she's looking pretty sharp... massive on serve, a bit shakier at the net. they're 6-5 up

Serena will partner with Muchova in Berlin :disco:

And Venus got a Wild Card in Bad Homburg :eyes:

So the opportunity to do S+V doubles is there but they'll probably save that for another occasion.

Mboko just had to retire from her singles match following a nasty fall :( Guessing that'll be her and Serena out of the doubles then.

I didn't see that but oh no!!! hope she won't be out too long, she was looking great on the grass.

Venus is playing with Eala in doubles too in Bod Homburg barring any late withdrawal.

Serena’s serve was still a thing of beauty even with 4 years out.

fuck's sake. rain meant no play at queen's until now with Emma and Cirstea scheduled to start at 3.30. 3 minutes into the warm up they go off because of further rain.

4.5 round of 16 matches to play today with QFs from tomorrow... and a max window of about 3 hours in which to play them all.
