British qualifier Arthur Fery takes out 20th seed Cobolli in r1 in Australia. Cobolli was apparently unwell, but still a good win for Arthur, who I think can make the top 100 this year.
 
Svitolina just took Gauff apart 6-1 6-2 to make her first AO semi final :o

Pegula-Anisimova QF tomorrow should be gold. c'mon Jess!!!
 
Not watched any of the Australian this year (time difference doesnt help) but it seems to have been largely uneventful pre QFs. Good to see Rybakina back in a slam semi, I just cant get excited by Pegula still sorry! So will be rooting for an Elena vs Sabs final.

Djokovic has ANOTHER win gifted through injury. If Sinner still wins in straight sets next round after Novak barely been on court it would be rather amusing.
 
A similar thing happened at the French Open between Musetti and Djokovic a few years ago, Musetti won the first two sets then Djokovic won 15 of the next 16 games before Musetti retired 4-0 down in the fifth. His time will come.
 
Yeh it definitely feels like Musetti could be a challenger to take a slam from the current big two, particularly on the clay.
 
Musetti is not going to beat the top 2 anytime soon in a slam over 5 sets if he continues to play 20 feet behind the baseline all the time.
 
Lorenzo needs to get a title under his belt again, he's lost so many finals the past few years.

If Svitolina manages to get a maiden slam at 31 it'd be a nice story, although I've never been a fan of her game. Sabs is the heavy favourite in that match up though.
 
this fifth set between Sinner and Novak is heart in mouth stuff. you'd still fancy Sinner to win, but outstanding tennis from Djokovic.
 
UNBELIEVABLE tennis being played right now. the quality of the rallies is insane.
 
I can totally see Djokovic winning this. He's had significantly less court time than Alcaraz and a 25th would be a great way to retire on.

I would not be mad with him beating that vile old bigot Margaret Court's record tbh.

Is the career slam on the line for Alcaraz? That could help him raise his level too, he doesnt seem to suffer under pressure, whereas I feel Novak will be wanting one last slam sooo much.
 
I just know if Zverev had won, Djokovic would have folded in the final just like in Tokyo 2021.

I'm fine with whatever happens on Sunday. Anyone but Sascha, baby.
 
Rybakina showed steel in that final set at 3-0 down to get the win from Sabs. Her performance over the last few months suggests she may feature in more Slam finals this year, after not fully capitalising on the Wimbledon win a few years back. I think I read she's only lost one match since the US open which is wild if true.

She didn't have a great Asian swing after the US Open, she lost to Eva Lys in China and Sabalenka in Wuhan, withdrew from her Semi final in Japan and made the quarter final in Brisbane earlier in January.

I do think she's a contender to make big strides in her game this year though.
 
Iga seems to either dominate or crumble lately with little in-between. Didn't she win a match, but with a 0-6 loss in the second set at this tournament. Crazy!

I must have misheard the statistics then, perhaps it was not lost from a set down then or something similar. Think she won the end of year WTA championship though. Either way, yes she is making big strides forward.
 
Glad Rybakina won, she deserves to set herself apart from some of the other one time slam winners. Sabalenka will kick herself losing that from 3-0 up in the third and also having had a break point for 4-2. Rybakina was clutch serving it out though on her forehand and final serve.

I don’t think this will hugely impact Rybakina’s overall performance. I think she’ll remain in the upper echelons with some big wins and some messy losses.

Agreed, this isn't going to be trajectory-changing. If anything, it's solidifying. She's got the firepower to go toe-to-toe with all the big names and she'll probably get a third or fourth major in the next 3-4 years, but she'll have just as many, if not more lackadaisical moments in 3rd or 4th rounds that'll stop her from really catching up with Iga or Aryna, even.

BUT, thrilled for her to get a second slam. Super impressive run and she's tremendous to watch when she's on song.
 
Carlos becomes the youngest man to complete the career slam. Well deserved king.

Djokovic should take some hope that he can still land a 25th after this. Yes he'll need some luck - probably one or both of Alcaraz & Sinner being upset early - but he's proven he can take advantage when the opportunity arises. When or if he does do it, I think he'll choose to bow out there & then like his idol Sampras did.
 
I think he'll retire this year regardless of winning another or not. and today was almost certainly his best chance - he won't reach another final having played so little tennis.

happy for Carlos, but I thought Novak could maybe turn that fourth set around. a bit gutting that he couldn't.
 
I wouldn’t begrudge Djokovic a 25th but I was wanting Alcaraz to win today. I think he has a good chance at Wimbledon potentially but much like the days of peak Serena/Venus probably needs someone else to take care of at least one of Alcaraz/Sinner for him.
 
Alcaraz at this level at only 22 is scary. I do believe by the time he and Sinner are 30 they'll have overtaken Nadal and Federer in the slam tally, injuries notwithstanding.
 
it depends who else pops up I think (not to mention injuries, form, motivation, etc). I really hope another player emerges who can win a few slams and prevent a total duopoly.

I think Draper and Musetti definitely have it in themselves to win a slam or two. Fonseca seems to be fancied as the next big thing but he seems to be struggling to break through.

Two players lower down who I like the look of are Tomas Machac and his tiny shorts, and Valentin Vacherot.

On the women's side, Vicky Mboko seems like a massive contender for futire slams.
