The BIG Mello 2024 GOSSIP & ARTIST SPECULATION Thread (2 Viewers)

There is no sixth heat or extra week. The AC vote basically takes place immediately after (or at the end of, not totally clear) heat 5.

I have nothing really for or against this, but not totally sure I get the point of it.

The AC-bit seems bizarre. There’s no way a comparison between the third and fourth places in Heat 1 with those in Heat 5 (who you just saw perform live 30 minutes ago) can be objectively fair.

They’d be better off getting an international jury to pick.

And god knows how they can fit it in - perhaps Heat 5 will be a longer show?

AC is boring as fuck anyway. I never watch it.
I would imagine this is the reason to be honest. They've tried and failed various ways of making AC interesting, so maybe they felt ditching it altogether was the way to go (even though the solution of going back to the good old grudge match knock-out days is staring them in the face).

Apparently the votes they received in the original heats still count towards their total which nominally balances out an advantage that Heat 5 songs have but in reality just adds a whole new layer of stupidity.

Great change!
  • Making time for a winners reprise ✅
  • An extra interval act per heat ✅
  • 1 more relevant heat ✅
  • More direct Q & less from AC ✅
  • 2 more songs ✅
AC has been an issue for several years. But AC is needed in Melodifestivalen as it creates interest and longevity around songs not qualifying direct. The streaming figures for acts going through AC is usually really good so cutting it entirely is not an option. This new format keeps the AC streaming advantage while not wasting an entire show on acts that we've already seen and who won't matter to the end result.

Another important thing here is that they've made time to bring the winners reprise back by just having 6 entries per week.

Lastly they've tried to make the AC vote as fair as possible by rolling over the votes casts in the heats.

How will the new AC work?
SVT will add another 30 min of program time after heat 5. They will show reprises of all 10 AC acts and Swedes will vote as usual in the app. This new vote will be weighted 50/50 with the votes recieved during the heat.

So the acts in Heat 5 have a huge advantage then in terms of getting through the back door

I slight advantage but I think it's compensated by SVT generally having stronger acts in heat 5. It's easier getting a good 3rd place vote in the first four heats, also having the advantage of having been streamed countless of times on YouTube and Spotify.

This is true, and in that sense it's a good way of tackling it from the point of view of keeping the show entertaining.

This absolutely doesn't make it as fair as possible though, because they'll all have been competing against different songs, the heats will have had different viewing figures and voter engagement etc.

If I were doing this I'd start them all from zero, and try and mitigate for the Heat 5 advantage by maybe having a special 30 minute show on the Sunday evening. Or just having it on an app vote open for 48 hours - heck it's 2023.

A standout AC entrant like Snälla Snälla or Every Single Day would definitely be better served placed in Heat 1-4 to build momentum.

I can't really be arsed about it being fair to potential marginal non qualifiers.

Like who really remembers the marginal NQs like Gorgeous, Ding Dong, Ballerina, Patrick Swayze, När ingen ser, Statements, I Will Wait, Hello Hi and In and out of Love etc?

Third/fourth placers from heat 5 will have less votes brought over from the heat as they've been competing against stronger acts but will gain some votes for being recent in everyone's minds. I think it's about as fair as they could've made it.

Having a 24h vote or a heat placed on a Sunday makes absolutely no sense from an entertainment perspective. They want to have the qualifier reveal in front of a large live audience.

It also doesn't feel 100% fair to the acts who came 4th in the heats and will have to catch up the 3rds instead of resetting scores as usual...

But I'm here for the 2 extra songs, hopefully they'll bring back the winners' encores and ditch the score reveal in the heats !

Honestly, the even years have been quite dodgy. 2016, 2018 and 2020 were not exactly stellar. Thank God 2022 stopped the RUT :disco:
The songs from heat 4 in 2016 and 2018 did really well in finalen but yes I'll give you 2020, that was quite dodgy. It's impressive how well Hanna's career has garnered momentum since.

There's careful wording around the "fair algorithm" used for weighting the Heats vs AC 50/50.

From what I can discern it seems as what is carried through from the Heats are the vote % in the individual age categories and not actual votes. That would give acts that have done comparatively well in their Heats a strong advantage going into AC.

All of these tweaks to the format but no mention of changing anything around the app voting and bizarre age groupings. Fingers crossed they can build more excitement into the results reveals and ditch the annoying 'Lyssna till ditt hjärta' segment which outstayed its welcome very quickly.

I'm howling at 'time for a winners reprise' as an advantage of the new format. They never DIDN'T have time for a winners reprise! As evidenced by BARELY ANYTHING FUCKING CHANGING THE LAST TWO YEARS WHEN THEY GOT RID OF IT!

Oh, have you missed the biggest format change OF FUCKING MODERN MELLO?

They don't eliminate anybody in the first round of voting leading to a 30 sec increase of the second reprise.

THEN there's the sequence of announcing 8 voting groups SUCKING UP 6.5 MIN OF SCREEN TIME (in Sweden as opposed to 8 minutes in Liverpool or 9 minutes in Turin).

The Mello crew runs a very tight ship as SVT only ever budges on their 1h 29min allotment when stage invaders tries to save the swamps.

Thus the consequences of this historic change adds up to excactly two winners reprises needing to be cut :(

I can't with the high drama of Swedish television! Where do they find the time to blow up all the balloons?!
They don't.
They save time by letting the attendees do it themselves, "audience participation" they call it.

Each act takes about 3.5 min of presentation + 3 min for performance. Add an extra 30 sec for each reprise + 30 sec of interviewing and lastly about 60 secs of various announcements with cameras cutting to them, reminding the audience they're there being all excited and whatnot.

Cutting one acts thus saves them a grand total of 9 minutes per semi, enough to reinstate both winners reprises and an extra 2 minutes to do whatever they want with.

Give me the unstructured free-for-all that is Sanremo over Mello punctuality anyday. Multiple reprises of each act’s full back catalogue and plenty time for interviewing and chatter.

Why is it so rigid when it pulls in such high ratings? Just stick another 15 minutes on?

I'm sure the Melodifestivalen crew has lobbied for that. Melodifestivalen is costly but measured in viewership per krona it's one of the most cost effective shows on the channel. Even increasing the semi finals to a 2h length would make sense to me.

I don't believe they would loose ratings by doing this but somehow SVT is making another assessment. It might also just be internal politics. As SVT has a set budget more money to Mello would mean cuts to other entertainment programs.

Can't we just appreciate how the Melfest crew found a way to milk SVT for an extra 30min of program time?

:churn::churn::churn:

Appreciate how a program made up of reprises is replaced by a whole program of actual fresh content :disco:
:RavenQueen:

Appreciate how this finally gives room for One More legacy act to be brought back from the dead.

I'd say good job melfest production, 12/10!

Fuck that. :D

Even as someone who has an okay grasp of Italian I am losing the will to live by the night of the final and just want it over with.

It's very possible. The Swedish latin rooster isn't very deep as SVT basically got four established acts to choose from; Mendez, Alvaro, Omar and Anna Book :D

Of these Omar feels like the obvious choice. He really wants to be able to live off his music and the final season of Young Royals will be released right around the next Melfest season.

If he comes back again they really need to think properly about how to get him through. He deserves much better than he's got as a performer, results-wise.

Was recently in the Croydon’s branch of ASDA when Moving Like That came on in the store. An elderly woman ahead of me in the queue turned around and said “That Omar Rudberg is far more talented than his Melodifestivalen results would imply. My boyfriend Oscar Enestad is a massive fan”, before leading the whole store in a mass sing-a-long of Om Om Och Om Igen.

Apparently his only non-Melfest songs to have appeared on the charts are ballads, so he might want to try that...
