The BIG Mello 2024 GOSSIP & ARTIST SPECULATION Thread (1 Viewer)

Was recently in the Croydon’s branch of ASDA when Moving Like That came on in the store. An elderly woman ahead of me in the queue turned around and said “That Omar Rudberg is far more talented than his Melodifestivalen results would imply. My boyfriend Oscar Enestad is a massive fan”, before leading the whole store in a mass sing-a-long of Om Om Och Om Igen.
Screaming!

He's the inverse Dr. Anna in that anyone over 40 doesn't seem to get him.

Of course it wan't helped by the creative directors making next to no effort to make his performances at least somewhat accessible to the average viewer.

Anyways, the first step is to not settle for borderline AC songs in the first place.

Yeah surely if Omar wants to do better at Mello he should try not sending such utterly forgettable material?

Yeah his problem is really just that he's tended to take things far far too youth appeal with a more niche genre that almost always has to make it via AC even when it does have more mass appeal.

It's always final-worthy material, it's just not always a final-worthy performance.

(But then, I'd probably always be scared too of accidentally winning the moment I made an effort, if I had done the one time I actually did)

My speculation on potential winners returning:

Martin Stenmark - Possible (but he's done so much since his ESC flop that he's not primarily remembered as a Mello winner in Sweden)
Carola - Generally unlikely
The Ark: Minimal chances
Perelli: Unlikely in 2024
Ernman: Generally unlikely
Bergendahl: Unlikely in 2024
Saade: Unlikely in 2024
Stjernberg: Possible
Sanna: Won't happen in 2024
Måns: Publicly stated he won't return the year after a win, has indicated he's very interested in returning around 2026
Robin B: Pretty likely
Benjamin: Generally unlikely
Lundvik: Possible
The Mamas: Not likely as The Mamas in 2024 (SVT preferred LouLou for 2023), Ash or Dinah returning is entirely possible
Tusse: Pretty likely
Cornelia: Unlikely in 2024
Loreen: Won't happen for the next 4 years

I feel like SVT will have to work extra hard to convince recent winners to come back next year. They will try though, simply because winners is a talking point which draws in viewers.

Tusse must be the lowest hanging winner fruit. His post-covid releases haven't all completely flopped but he hasn't gained any serious traction either.

I still think it would be early for a return, but since Tusse is a young artist he might want to come back and showcase something different !

I'd gladly wait another DECADE before hearing another Lundvik or Bengtsson song if they're anything close to their latest entries :bruised:

As for the Mamas, I'd be quite interested to hear more from the tallest one (I assume the non-Swedish speaking one is off the cards ?) but I doubt they would want to repeat LouLou's "success" from this year...

No chance of an outing for JESSAN?

Jessan is entirely possible, she's often asked to sing on good schlager demos and songwriters knows that if the songs gets picked Jessan has a hard time saying no. She's just slightly above Bengtzing in how difficult she is to persuade. No one remembers Horizon so it also feels like it's been a while since she last entered.

If she does come back the focus will probably be less on her win 20 years ago and more about some kind of record. I believe she would be the artists who has competed the most amount of times in modern Melodifestivalen.

Another schlager diva SVT will ask is Magnus Carlsson. He was close to entering a few years ago when SVT offered him a spot with a Swedish schlager. In the end he held out, wanting to be more competitive by singing a song in English.

@Hak don't leave me on the edge of my seat waiting for FRANS news
Frans is possible.

Similarly to Felix Sandman (just before his second solo participation) and Tusse, he got a burnt out from all the commotion. Even though none of them has ruled out coming back it still makes them a bit hesitant.

Frans took a hiatus from music and finished high school after his win and so didn't start seriously releasing music again until 2020.

Of these three I still believe Tusse is the likeliest comeback. This is because he hangs out a lot in Mello circles, works with the usual songwriters and is signed to a label that actively pushes for their artists to enter Mello. It's also much easier to find a suitable song for someone with Tusse's vocals.

Does anyone actually WANT Tusse back? He gave Sweden their worst performing song in years and only won due to his Idol win/sob story which of course Europe didn’t give two hoots about. He’s got a good voice but his stage presence is rubbish.

He's a name, he's a winner and he's generally well liked.

Importantly there's no consensus of him having embarrassed Sweden like there was with Dr. Anna and her NQ.

I would like Tusse back - he's a fab engaging little queen and I suspect his voice is probably quite versatile genre-wise. I just don't want him winning again really. But if it came to it I don't think he'd mortify Sweden on home ground.

Rules of Melodifestivalen 2024

Melodifestivalen will be open for submissions from August 25 to September 25. 15 songs will be selected by a jury and 15 by production. Artists are selected by SVT.

Entrants needs at least one Swedish composer to be eligible. SVT aims for 30% of songs in Swedish and 50% of songs with at least one female composer.

Andra Chansen, which got renamed Semifinalen in 2021, will now be called Förlängning.

Förlägning (lit. forlonging/prolonging) translates to Sudden Death or Extra Time. Extra Time is amusing considering it's the first time since 2007 that SVT granted Melfest extra screen time, and not from a lack of trying on the Melfest production side.

Andra Chansen was extended by half an hour in 2020 for the MF Hall of Fame.
