It’s the second one, but if you want to settle the argument the reason is that some words spelt with an ‘a’ make a short ‘o’ sound (and that’s how they’re taught too)

also another way to know is after the letters ‘w’ and ‘qu’, you get an ‘a’ that has a short ‘o’ sound
