The Chicks (Formerly Dixie Chicks) - Gaslighter

First listen to the album has been a big disappointment, but it took the singles a little while to grow on me, so hopefully it’ll be the same with the album.
 
It’s definitely not as INSTANT as I’d hoped, but some tracks have already grown on me,

My Best Friend’s Wedding is GORGEOUS.
 


Sleep At Night is the perfect single choice. Some of the songs are more straightforward than I expected - this really is their pop album.

Yep, there aren't many instant songs indeed, but it has the feel of an album that will be a major GROWER. Hope so!
 
I didn't listen to Julianna Calm Down when it got released but I think it's my favourite on first listen. It's completely gorgeous and feels like it has the strongest melodies and soundscape here.

Young Man is really beaut too.

Texas Man really wouldn't have been out of place on the last record.

So far so good, what are you lot missing?
 
I know it was a single, but I quite like that they open the album with Gaslighter to SCARE OFF anybody that isn't on their page politically from the off :disco:
I'm enjoying this so far, March March is my initial fave with the clappy-banjo breakdown.

I did have to skip For Her however which was a bit TOO SCREECHY for me.

It is a beautiful record and really will only add to their legacy.

It’s a strong return, and I love how thoroughly bitter and depressing it is in places. :disco:
 
Giving this a go. I've never been able to get on board with Natalie's vocal, which veers between whiny and shrill to me.

I am interested in the idea of a fuck you concept album though.
 
Good songs and I like them in theory but her voice just goes through me. Tights On My Boat was fun.
 
Tights On My Boat was probably the least interesting on the album to me

Imagine not enjoying her voice! Can't relate!
 
I really like these guys and they love it so I might change my mind

Julianna Calm Down reminds me of Alanis Morissette (when she was good).

I haven't listened to the album yet but Sleep at Night is the best single so far.

Julianna definitely is very Alanis but I find myself feeling it goes on a bit.
 
On first listen this feels like a Natalie Maines solo album with the (Dixie) Chicks name slapped on it to ensure as many people as possible hear her angry ranting about her ex?

Some nice songs, but where are the signature harmonies?
 
10 Sleep At Night
Yas queen! Definitely a parallel with Shania's Poor Me. Her husband's girlfriend's husband called her up - maybe she'll get with him like Shania? Great tune, great lyrics.
 
09 Texas Man
I'd rather NOT think about someone's body being tangled up with hers, if it's all the same to her. But let's be honest, we could ALL do with a Texas man.
I love the "Everybody wants top market, I'm a little bit unravelled" bit especially.
 
Perhaps it's just that Kylie has redefined the landscape, but in a post Say Something world, this felt like a load of self indulgent screechy old nonsense.
 
08 Everybody Loves You
This is lush and so sad. Such a strong opening to the album so far. "Do they know that I regret you? Do they know I shouldn't have to?" :(
 
I'm not loving it either. It feels too specifically angry at Natalie's ex. Maybe if I had an ex I hated with that much vehemence I'd find it easier to get on board, but it just isn't fun, pretty, relatable or particularly musically interesting. It's just a load of bitter shouting for the most part.

Songs about breakups aren't exactly that NICHE!
 
I’ve listened to little else all week, other than Kylie. I still think it’s a fantastic album! Gorgeous vox, smart lyrics and melodies that really grew on me. Top notch stuff!
 
07 For Her
I like the plinky banjo on this. A bit less interesting than the other ones so far. It kind of reminds me of something like Juanita by Shania. I'm getting quite a lot of Shania vibes, oddly.
