This explains it. I dont have Living ! Cant get cable in my area, and not allowed a Sky dish :-(
 
Is this any good? I know it's supposedly quite similar to Curb Your Enthusiasm & Arrested Development, but then so was Kirstie Alley's laugh-free 'Fat Actress'!
 
I hear good and bad. I know it was cancelled after one season, but apparantley Lisa Kudrow has been nominated for an Emmy for it, so they are talking about bringing it back...
 
I'm kinda waiting for something funny to happen .. but then I realised i've watched over half the series already :(
 
I watched most of an episode by chance last week and I loved it. Not laugh-out-loud obvious funny, but rather subtle comedy IMO. Worked well.
 
It sounds like the Julia Louis-Dreyfuss sitcom idea from Curb Your Enthusiasm, doesn't it everyone. Yep.
 
I LOVED the show... very DRY humor which Lisa is really good at

"Fat Actress" was just TRY HARD humor which is why it tanked so badly

apparently it is coming back so I am well excited
 
HBO won't pick up another season of The Comeback, mercifully euthanizing the eternally suffering fictional actress Valerie Cherish and sending real-life counterpart Lisa Kudrow to the unemployment line. Goodbye, Valerie, you're going to a better place, one where Paulie G can't abuse you and you'll no longer have dog poop in your hair.

You see.. i dont WANT subtle comedy. I want comedy that will make me laugh .. or at least make me smile. Failing that, at least help me derive SOME AMUSEMENT AT ALL from it.

the comeback is brilliant. though deffinately not for everybody, which is why it kinda tanked but why it got the emmy nod.

i dont want to see it return though, it ended perfectly

The show is composed of reality TV footage filmed during the life of a TV star from the 80's, played by Lisa Kudrow, trying to wage a career comeback by staring in a new TV sitcom. The twist is that rather than showing us a final edited fake reality TV show, the show is composed of outtakes from the fake reality TV show. We get to see the character redo lines that are supposed to be spontaneous reality, we see her continually tell the filmmakers to stop filming -- which they never do. And we even see the filmmakers themselves dealing with some of the logistical problems inherent in making this type of show.
 
It's not really outtakes though, is it? Its more like unedited footage. That description doesn't make it sound too good does it? :D
 
I guess not.... it IS funny though, and I think everyone should give it a chance !

Really ?? I love it from the word go.. but then maybe thats cos I've always liked Kudrow.... I just found it a great insight into the world of reality tv, and and with a nice humourous edge

I've had the DVD of this for ages and I'm finally watching it.

LOVING it. Very funny but also rather sad. Valerie is so completely pathetic, but your heart does go out to her at times!

Lisa Kudrow really should be getting more work. Her performance is really really layered here. Moreso to be honest than those of Larry David and Jason Bateman in the better known Curb and Arrested...

I had this and lent it out, I really need to get it back. Although it might be les arkward to just buy it again. LOVE it, seriously funny and made me watch Phoebe in a whole new light too.
 
I just watched the whole DVD of this in one day.

I loved some bits of it; the Palm Springs episode in particular was a highlight, as already mentioned. Kudrow was amazing, and the whole concept was interesting, even if it totally didn't work at times. I want to say more but can't really think how to put it. Often amazing, but just as often some of it was misjudged I thought.
 
Has anyone seen Lisa's new online sitcom called "Web Therapy"? It looks AMAZING but I can't be bothered with the faff of watching it online so I hope there might be a DVD one day...

I like that advert! But I don't feel like that harsh-toned, im-a-bitch comedy, the same as in The Comeback, is really her forte. It always feels a bit too forced.
 
Only just watched this and LOVED it.
Lisa was great obviously but I love all the more subtle things going on in the background like how Jane changes throughout the series.

oh I'm loving this. I watched 2 1/2 episodes in one sitting last night; I can't really imagine the entire series taking me that long.

The thing that got me most though is how bittersweet it is. I wonder if that's why it was cancelled; maybe it wasn't laugh out loud funny enough for a mainstream audience. It's incredibly subtle (Kudrow is a master of subtle comedy, which is ironic after playing Phoebe for 10 years) and she does a great of making you feel so utterly sorry for Valerie, even though she can be a bit annoying sometimes. My heart sank when they didn't announce her name straight away at the Upfronts. The she comes on and gets cut off as she speaks :D

I love how she tries so hard to be nice to everyone, partly because she's on camera and partly because deep down she knows this is her last shot, even if she won't admit it to herself. I loved her reaction to that arsehole scriptwriter when he used his finger to shoot at her head when she suggested (again) that she should say something on stage. So utterly deflated.

I know she was nominated for an Emmy but she deserves wider recognition for it. Apparently there was a lot of acclaim when it was first released (passed me by completely I have to say).

And it is so ON THE KNUCKLE with regards to TV production. Painfully accurate.

And how hard must it be to film a show within a show within a show?

I definitely think it was too subtle for stupid old Americans.
