The Confessions II first listen thread

The confidence when she seemed unconfident. I actually feel ashamed of saying this was a safety first move on her part because she was scared of where she was. But then - maybe she was? Maybe this is what she can do when her back is to the wall? And fuck me.
 
Oh it's already in my veins. It's gorgeous isn't it? And she is singing really well. The Mirwais/Orbit strummyness is utterly divine. She's hit the jackpot.
 
'Danceteria' and 'L.E.S Girl' are my standouts.

My feeling upon first listen is that it's a real achievement. I like that she didn't play it safe and give us a straight-up Confessions tribute. So even though I prefer the cohesion of that album, I like that this one is very reflective and takes a lot of twists and turns. I didn't expect that from the singles.

Some of those twists didn't work for me. I don't really care for EDMadonna or the football song and I struggle to connect with the tinny vocal production on some of the more plaintive stuff towards the end.

Regardless, it's a great album, brilliantly produced, her best in twenty years and lyrically it's nice to hear her with her heart on her sleeve.
 
this album is like Celebration Tour: the album. still trying new things, while dressing up in old clothes, reminding the world she's the best who ever did it... the scale and ambition of it is SO far beyond the album it shares its title with. it's a career retrospective.
 
OMG. :o What an album!

9.5/10 (let down by Sabrina and Everything which I found a bit subpar compared to EVERYTHING else)

No other notes. I got a little teary listening to it - it felt like she was taking me by the hand on a personal tour of her dancefloor beginnings and later through a confessional of all her recent trauma.

Why on earth wasn't Danceteria the lead single?

I also think it should be the album title TBH. I get that it's touching a lot of the same reference points as that album, but Confessions II immediately set an expectation that this would be much more of a reductive re-hash than it is.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. This isn't just her going to the club because everyone loves her when she goes to the club. She's actually got something to say and something to show that's new and fresh.

Stuart really did Kylie a little dirty. but that could also be evidence that Kylie was not especially hands-on in the studio, whereas M is a control freak with a vision.
 
Is My Sins Are My Savior Madonna's Woman's World (Neneh not Cher)? Oh we got beats. Oh we got a "ray of light" nod. We have a Madonna album that is an embarrassment of riches again. Oh maybe she didn't sing "ray of light" (sounds like "way of life" now).
 
Also I know I'm a bitch and I know you're Madonna but Bizarre was basically rife for a Kylie duet. 😭
 
This will probably end up besting Like A Prayer for me. It's so good because it's so personal!
 
She's sixty seven. Has anyone else ever done anything like this at any age, let alone sixty seven?
 
The silky Betrayal is trip hop textured and completely unexpected! Love that she's now in the taxi home and getting the feels rather than the munchies.
 
Her vocals on Fragile are stunning and I take it back, her daughter does sound great on The Test. I wasn't expecting to like that song as much as I do

I always thought this was just cope. "Oh she's just singing like this intentionally".:eyes: But now I'll have to admit they were right because I was shocked by how good she sounds on some of these songs.
 
Madonna gave birth to a mumbling Imogen Heap. What a beautiful sulky counterpart to Madge getting sentimental. Love all this. Couldn't be happier with what we've got here.

A tour really is necessary. How am I supposed to afford Glastonbury tickets / PUT UP WITH GOING TO GLASTONBURY
 
L.E.S Girl is an atypical swoon. I am fucking hooked on this.

I could never envision a world where Madonna would make an album this dazzling, hedonistic and heartstring-pulling as this again. And now I can't imagine a world without it.
 
I'd rather she does Glasto so I can watch at home for free with ice cream. :disco:
