Been playing this a lot today for maudlin reasons I’ll not go into but if anyone says the first 50 or so seconds of this is not the best intro ever to a song, well they simply have no ears. It sometimes makes me want to burst into tears.

 
I remember this being released. I'd fallen in the love with them in '83 and played my "Japanese Whispers" cassette to death. I did think The Caterpillar (their only single of '84) was cute but really rather odd, although I picked up an ex-jukebox copy in a newsagent (this was a thing back then...). It was in really good nick having, unsurprisingly, not been played very much).

When this came out I was ecstatic. I loved it on first listen and still do. Bought it in John Menzies in Helensburgh. 12". Still have it.

Simon Gallup. This is him today:

He'd left the band in '82 after a mahoosive fight after a gig (in Holland, I think). Producer Phil Thornally played bass in the interim with Robert Smith playing bass on some of the records. "In Between Days" was Gallup's first single back and he swiftly became Smith's right hand man. In fact, he's the only other remaining member of that line-up.
 
I've had this song stuck on my mind since this thread went online, and I've now put on the GH. I'm having a bit of a jam, I haven't heard them in ages, but the segueing on the album is disgusting :argh:

I bought the Catch 12" on my 14th Birthday. I still think, as a 3 somg EP, it's one of their very best singles - in fact, only the "Half An Octopus" 4-song edition of "Close To Me" can top it.
 
This is the song Smith had been working on when he finally collapsed in the street in '84 under stress of being in Siousxie and the Banshees and making The Cure's records pretty much on his own. It's one of their most frighteningly magnificent moments.

 
...and another classic b-side, "La Ment" from the "The Walk" 12". Again, this is pretty much Smith on his own. There's a bonkers demo that went out of a flexidisc but this version shows how well Smith could refine and shape a half-formed idea into a startling and potent work and heaven alone knows how this ended upon a b-side. No wonder they complied "Japanese Whispers".

(PS - one of his best lyrics too)

 
They're one of my favourite bands of all time. CONVENIENTLY they stopped short of SHITTING ON THEIR LEGACY with DIMINISHING RETURNS like other GOTH 80s BANDS I COULD MENTION by not releasing any new material after 4:13 Dream which was the perfect CODA for me.

I don't often do LIVE but I did see them in concert and a FORTUITOUS UNHAPPY ACCIDENT (David Bowie's heart attack that retired him from performing :( ) meant they were bumped to TOP BILLING of the night (it originally was Lou Reed, Cure and then Bowie, I KNOW RIGHT :disco: ) and boy, was that a concert and a half. They came onstage at midnight, opened with Plainsong and finished THREE HOURS AND TWENTY MINUTES later with a FUNEREAL 10 minute version of Faith. It was MAGICAL.
 
I can never give myself over to The Cure, because they were the 'cool' act that other kids in sixth form liked when I was having the piss ripped out of me for listening to Kylie on my cheap Sanyo pretend Walkman.

I have to admit I'm not 100% familiar with their entire discography. But from what I've heard/own I would say:

1. Disintegration
1. Head On The Door
3. Wild Mood Swings (I know..!!)
4. Mixed UP
5. 17 Seconds
8. Pornography
9. Japanese Whispers
10. Wish

I know it's a mixture of studio & non-stud but yeah.
 
The Cure are basically the coolest band ever. Everyone loves them, they never got too popular to be hated, loads of high profile people worship and cover them. And now, they are just as popular and cool as they've ever been sitting as the elder statesmen of the goth demographic and general rock legends. The Cure 🥰
 
My favourite Cure album is still Pornography and probably always will be. It was actually the following year that I first heard them (and fell for them) but that album has long fascinated me - it is deliberately grotesque and yet utterly beautiful - it captures the momentary elation of nihilism whilst also demonstrating how fleeting that moment is and capturing the isolation, the devastation. "The Figurehead" could be their greatest recording.

I saw this lot last night and they were legendary. Played two encores and were on stage almost three hours. Packed with hits and some deep cuts. So good.

Makes it all somehow more transcendently hilarious for monolithic masterpiece Disintegration's reception to include Morrissey labeling it "absolutely vile" and "a new dimension to the word crap", he was so mad :D

Did he? :D

The first thing he released after "Disintegration" was "Ouija Board Ouija Board"!! Trying to imagine him thinking "there, that'll show 'em".
