Holder has said that £500k was an exaggeration but also declined to say what it was worth to him annually. Put it this way, he has a nice house and hasn't had to work for 20 years.

From what I have read he said it is a good pension plan for him and he can’t put a precise figure on it as it varies each year. He has earned more some years when it is used on an advert, and less in other years. The Performing Rights Society quotes a figure of £512,000. :disco::santa:

Which makes it even more surprising that more acts don’t go in for a genuine Christmas hit each year.

I wonder if streaming has been better or worse? Most years they wouldn't press a physical single but now it just gets hammered for the 4-5 weeks before Xmas. It can't be the worst.

Checking the streaming numbers it has been streamed a lot less than All I Want For Christmas Is You and Fairytale of New York, but I assume Slade have more possession of the rights to Merry Xmas Everybody than the other two do of their Christmas songs?
 
Yes, Slade own their masters, I believe. Holder and Jim Lea formed their own publishing company and bought their rights out in full. They licenced to Union Square/Salvo for a while and are now licencing to BMG.
 
Especially in the streaming age. I know each stream itself is minimal income, but when you work out the total streams (assuming Spotify is about 33% of the streaming market or so) that so many of them get each and every year, it must be an absolute goldmine for some.

Sheeran #33 in the midweeks, behind only Wham at #22 and Mariah at #20 in terms of Christmas songs.
 
Well, unless Bob Geldof decides to double down on doing it as an 'anti-woke' Christmas anthem, but that probably doesn't go down too well with the intended aim :eyes:

Slade and Wizzard barely get a look in til Christmas week now do they? I think we discussed this last year - which old pop songs have transferred well generationally, compared to others
 
I also don’t ever remember Bobby Helms being a staple in the UK despite being in nearly all the movies… And Brenda Lee was well known but not one of the biggest… now every year they dominate. Out of all the classics it’s interesting that it’s those two, only to say that they’ve always been huge in America.

Growing up, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Andy Williams were always much more present.

The first Christmas playlist on Spotify when I just searched ('Christmas Hits') has them in this order:

Mariah
Wham!
Michael Buble
Ariana Grande
Brenda Lee
Bobby Helms
Dean Martin
Paul McCartney
Kelly Clarkson
Sia

Worryingly Leona is only #43 on that playlist :(
 
I saw that one. The order definitely doesn’t reflect what we grew up with and times they have changed.

I don’t approve of Ariana and Kelly being THAT high over Elton, Chris Rea, John Lennon , Band Aid and many others.

yeah this (minus the newer ones like Ariana and Kelly) is probably a list of the most popular Christmas songs in America throughout my lifetime, if not longer

In fairness, One More Sleep kind of disappeared for a few years after it was released before gradually coming back into public consciousness and only in the last year or two really having its place among the “classics.” Same with Kelly Clarkson’s one to a lesser extent.

It even took All I Want For Christmas Is You a good decade to become a Christmas standard. In the late 90s / early 00s you NEVER really heard it here in comparison to the Slades and Band Aids.

So who knows what from the last few years will end up coming back every year? Because as someone pointed out, people are still recording Christmas songs, it’s just not a fair comparison with the ones that have had decades to reach saturation point.
 
I'd say if anything, there's been a real resurgence in artists recording original Christmas songs in recent years. There pretty much wasn't one of note full stop for a decade between The Darkness and Leona Lewis in 2013. Since 2017 there's been a real deluge.
