The new film from the director of the marvellous Dogtooth. It's out this Friday and looks utterly bizarre and very funny. The premise is hysterical.

In a dystopian near future, single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.

Yeah I saw an advert for it and thought what the genuine fuck. Looks worthy of a DL.
 
This is never going to reach cinemas anywhere near where I live so I'll head down the DL route too whenever it's made available.
 
The premise is so bizzare, I hope it's actually as good as it's meant to be. I'm holding the hope that it will end up in the cinema here since we got Tale of Tales.
 
Really enjoyed this. However, the first half was much stronger than the second, which made it feel that it was outstaying its welcome. I was shocked when it finished to see that it was only 1hour45mins. It's very darkly funny.
 
Between this and Suffragette I have a new found appreciation for how attractive Ben Whishaw is.

Ending felt to come quite sudden, didn't feel like it had been on for two hours but it was pretty fitting / satisfying all the same. The first half was a lot stronger, very funny in a dark way in places but it wasn't holding my interest as much in the last half hour or so.

Greek 'art' films are like that. Weird to the max with strange dialogues and themes and performances. I was surprised with its critical success and oscar nominations and everything, because personally I didn't like it at all.

Hopefully this one will be a bit more 'normal'.
 
i really appreciated dogtooth but i did not love it and doubt i will see it again for at least a good 10 years. unless this one is as good as the trailer promises obviousloo.
 
Dogtooth is one of the greatest things of all time. The line he delivers about hoping the woman he's just hit over the head with a VCR has bad kids with a bad personality is one I still use in everyday speech.
 
This was enjoyable enough but ultimately far too self conscious for its own good.

I did like the appearance of Kylie though. And hearing Rachel Weisz say "fuck me up the arse". And Olivia Colman singing Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart. And Ashley Jenson in general.

That poor poor dog.
 
First half MUCH stronger than the second. It was darkly comedic, but had horror undertones - at times it reminded me of The Wicker Man with that feeling of impending doom in the first half, but then it lost that feeling in the second half.
 
I agree with the comments here about the first half being stronger. I found it funny but rarely openly laughed. I think my favourite bit was the "woman walks without man" stage piece. I also thought it was a brilliant satire on modern (or perhaps not so modern) social constructs: society's desire to impose relationships on single people.

A mention must also be given to the cast. Some great names here. Olivia Colman, the woman who played the older sister in Dogtooth, the older lesbian in Blue Is the Warmest Colour, the bloke from Ambassadors, Ben Whishaw, Keith from the Office... great stuff!
 
i don't get the "first half stronger" thing. different but equally as ace.
 
I just saw this (now on Netflix).

I have no idea how I feel about it at all and I love a good dystopian piece. Stella fucking cast though.

Agree with both here - the best thing about this film were the side characters in the hotel and so when it moves to the forest it loses a sense of its edge and is an unwelcome reset.

However, from the second half I loved the scene where they asked the hotel manager’s husband to shoot his wife, and of course the ambiguous ending.

My favourite scene overall was the woman so obsessed with her hair that she’d rather have been a pony than married to a guy with terrible hair (guy with the terrible hair…BACK OFF!)
