Latest feelgood Stephen King adaptation that definitely isn’t a thinly veiled parable for our current hellish times.



This was pretty bleak but I was definitely engaged. Mark Hammil hamming it up to the max kind of felt like it belonged in a lighter movie, and it has that typical Stephen King thing where the engrossing setup leads to a fairly blah conclusion, but on the whole it worked for me. Nice showcase for Cooper Hoffman as well, who I really liked in Licorice Pizza recently.

That was almost the exact review a friend of mine gave to it. It’s all true… but I wasn’t thinking about any of that when watching for the first time.

The source book I think did a slightly better job of explaining the motivations (or at least acknowledging that some of them were just very silly impulsive masochistic teenagers without a clue), and they mostly suffered from acne rather than weight gain.

But I suspect that wouldn't have made a movie audience any more sympathetic to the characters.
