I'm still not convinced that 'cancel culture' is really a THING that has an actual impact on the careers of celebrities and public figures. We talked about this a bit in the Ellen topic a while ago - there remains a level of fame and power where someone can never be touched by criticism (whether that criticism is justified or not). I understand the urge people may have to vent online about the powerful- they might feel like they're reclaiming a tiny bit of the power for themselves. That doesn't mean that the celebrity actually has to account for anything they've done though, or address it at all.

Exactly this. The constant race to show how open minded and accepting they are means they’re becoming increasingly intolerant of anyone who doesn’t fully suit their worldview.

Also from my small scale experience of the mass attack of thousands of people online is absolutely horrible. No thoughts for mental health issues whatsoever. The idea of putting somebody through that for often minor indiscretions is not a fair or equal punishment.

I think it's worth pointing out that most of the examples in this topic have been (purposely?) silly things, like Jodie Comer's choice of boyfriend. There are plenty of cases of online pressure outing people for perpetrating genuine sexual assaults, blatant racism, and so on. Just look at MeToo for one example, and it's arguable none of us would know the name Jeffrey Epstein if not for the online discourse around him, for another - also a lot of the recent BLM movement wouldn't have picked up steam without videos of police brutality going viral (and the associated online outrage). I'm not entirely sure what my point is here, I suppose it's that it's a double edged sword.

Why are you lumping ALL people complaining on Twitter as if they're all part of the same "liberal" hive mind? I don't think we should conflate people moaning about Jodie Comer's boyfriend with trans people rebuking JK Rowling's hate essays.

What I'm saying is that if you don't like cancel culture, you should be directing your ire at the rags first, since not only they're making money out of other people's shaming but they're also doing it on a much larger and much more influential scale.

The issue I have with cancel culture is that it shuts down any opportunity for the person to reflect and learn from their behaviour or prejudices. If you are going to challenge someone, they need to be given time to understand the impact of their words/actions or educate themselves. That doesn't happen right away.

Not everyone will be open to accepting that feedback and some will double down on their racism or sexism etc. For that there should be consequences. However I really hate this mentality of the mob gunning people down and tearing them apart as if that will make them see the light. Very few people are receptive to that and if anything it makes them more defensive and entrenched in their views.

Well I’m directing what I’m saying towards liberal activists because I regard them as people whose views I share, but who are going too far and find their fundamentalism counterproductive.

I don’t need to air my thoughts on the Sun and the likes because it goes without saying that I don’t approve of them.

This reminds me of the early '10s when I was a member of tumblr (dot) com and a lot of the discourse seemed entirely insincere.

There was a blog called YOUR FAVE IS PROBLEMATIC, which basically existed to chronicle the times a celeb had transgressed the accepted norms of whoever was compiling the list. It felt more like a box ticking exercise, or a resource for Internet stans to weaponise against whatever artist they didn't like rather than anything particularly useful, especially when a lot of the things deemed problematic were a big old reach. And I feel like I still see that approach a lot.

There's an entire sub-set of social media influencers who exist just to occasionally lead crusades against celebs for being ~problematic~ and then once they get the ball rolling they comb through their public history to find further reasons that 'X is bad actually'. An example that springs to mind is when some Internet gay decided that Jameela Jamil was faking illnesses for attention and it became the issue of the week online, and presumably earned him lots of shiny new followers too! Sometimes I think it's just a way to be a bully but feel good about it.

There's loads of other issues I have with things falling under this umbrella but I'll save the essay.

But that said, I don't really have a problem with 'cancel culture' in that it's such a nebulous term and I agree with - for example - criticising TERFs, companies having the right to sack actual bigots, memes about Jess Glynn, punching Nazis etc etc.
