The Moopy Celebrity "Cancellation" Tracker

These twitter activists are turning into their right wing counterparts.

Worse. The real racists and the real homophobes are looking at the LGBT community and laughing at them as they tear each other apart with their petty self righteous drama. They're giving the far right exactly what they wanna see.

Eh that whole letter thing is so nasty and fake. A trans tv critic at Vox who wrote about how she was hurt that one of her colleagues signed it has been hounded and threatened over the last two days and not one of those signatories did anything to defend her (some of them even fanned the flames).

I don't approve of anyone setting themselves up as some kind of arbiter of moral standards. This is all a bit Mary Whitehouse in reverse.

Person A: "Let's just keep out systemic racism, homophobia and misogyny and if you want to kill a trans person that's fine"
Person B "No, it's not fine, it's pretty fucking far from fine and I'm not buying any more of your books. I'm also going to encourage others not to fund your hate by doing the same"
Raspberry Swirl: "Well, you're just as bad as each other"

I was going to make a serious point about tolerance of intolerance but then the authors name distracted me because I'm a child

Wow. I guess that’s one way of interpreting it, if you’re inclined on believing that this is what I stand for.

Where have I ever said it’s ok to kill a trans person or even denied their rights? If anything this whole Terf debate (which I admit not knowing much about at all) is a prime example of what I’m opposing; you have someone who thinks the rights of women is above everything, they’re so fundamental in their belief that even transwomen are to them not women enough.

Of course it isn't what I think you stand for but these are the extremes at which this is being played out and no conversation about it can be considered complete without it. The signatories of that letter are supporting their right to have no consequences for their words as if words can truly be separated from actions. The people who suffer from those who are emboldened by them are being told that we're the real problem as the wealthy and privileged play victim.

But I’m not speaking of that particular letter or any issues regarding trans or any other minorities’ rights.

My issue is this cancel culture being directed towards anyone and especially people who you’d think are on ”our” side with the minor devation from 100% purity.

Most of us here are liberal - for the sake of debate/discussion (which I guess is the point of being here?) I’m raising the part of my opinion that differs from the majority. I don’t find it necessary to express my views on trans rights or what I think about Rupert Murdoch to you, because it’s something we all agree on and therefore pointless to mention.

You're being too literal. Neither Person A not Person B were meant to represent you or your views. But what is essentially being knocked by Rowling etc is the notion that people should have any kind of platform to raise concerns about what they do and say. The absence of a gatekeeper perturbs them. They are happy to use the old "disagree with what you say but defend your right to say it" for Person A but Person B is a disgrace for trying to have an impact on someone's income.

I don’t really think we’re talking about the same issue. I think Rowling could say and express whatever she wants but she can’t expect there not being any consequences. In my opinion the cancel issue and backlash in her case is legitimate, but the cancel culture as a phenomenon per default is what I have issues with.

Hereby lies the problem though because what you think is acceptable, other people will not. Your drawing the line at Rowling may not be enough for some and may be too much for others. You can't "cancel cancel culture" if all you're cancelling is what you think is unacceptable, but moan about "activists" having a go at other things that you don't have a problem with.

We may all be "liberal" (:eyes:) here, but I can tell you there would be lots of disagreements between what you and I think is acceptable, for example. So it'll never be cut and dry.

I genuinely don't think the latter exists. The vast majority of these people claiming to be victims of cancel culture have experienced no actual consequences at all.
An exception is Laurence Fox. Always a poor to middling actor who got most of his work through connections, those connections have decided he's not good enough to risk a backlash for his white supremacist cobblers. That isn't "cancel culture", it's just consequences. People don't want to work with racists when they don't have to. I might have to tolerate the odd "edgy" arsehole at work because I'm not the employer but I wouldn't be in a band with one. I have that choice. People are making that choice and sending out a message in the doing so. This scares a lot of people, mainly those who know that they are just as average as he is.
Other than that, it really is just abusers. Has Tom Meighan been "cancelled"? No, he's been told to fuck off for an act of horrific violence towards his partner. The danger is that cases like his will become tied in and the right-wing press (i.e. almost all of it) will move to have cases like his viewed more sympathetically too.

Cancelling someone because they DATE someone who is a bit right wing, is a bit MUCH

KYLIE CANCELLED for Prince Andrew rumours :eyes:

I draw the line at when someone think a certain group of people should have less rights than others. I might be wrong but that’s what I think.

You’re already questioning me being a liberal because I don’t agree with you, which is fine, but it just proves my point.

What? I'm not questioning you! It's just that I wouldn't call myself a 'liberal'... but for the sake of the argument I went along with you!

My point stands though.

I think Peekaboo was poking fun at the conflation of left-wing with liberalism, to be honest! I could have misread him though.

How odd. It was working earlier when I posted it, and just then when I quoted it. But not now.

But it was the same as Kate's anyway.

Sebastian Stan CANCELLED :x:

Oh wow, cancelling isn’t enough, he should be publicly executed (whoever he is).
