I'd say we've got a better argument with Kylie/Madonna because they generally sound like today's yoof music despite being much older whereas Dire Straits vs. SAW couldn't be more different. It's pure ageism versus a stylistic battle

I’m sure there was nothing more in it than it rhymes with JACK

That it rhymed was convenient, but they were also chosen carefully. I didn't hate them like Shirley did/does, but they were very much adult pop in the same way that Sheena railed against You Win Again by The Bee Gees when they were charting better than Bananarama. As a teenager they were music for your parents, not you.
