OK well it started with Divine's 'You Think You're A Man' pretty much but that wasn't a huge hit. Haze was in the market for a follow up to Searchin' and approached them for something that sounded like Divine's backing track and promptly delivered SAW their first top 10 hit with a gay and feminist anthem. Pete Burns wanted something that was like Hazell Dean's record and You Spin Me Round was born. Bananarama wanted something like Dead Or Alive's record and Siobhan (I think) decided Venus would be perfect for the treatment.

You spin me round, no contest. I discovered the H. Dean song recently, add it to the something you discovered because of Moopy list.
 
Love them all - they’re all 10/10- but:

1. Hazell
2. Dead or Alive
3. Bananarama

The DISCO DRAMA of Hazell’s lyrics just wins out. The structure is actually kinda complex, her delivery is phenomenal and SAW haven’t hit the generic rubbish their “written on a fag packet in 3 minutes” lyrics ended up being.

DoA first but very little between the other two. I'll go for the Nanas just because I would.
 
No Fool (For Love) and They Say It’s Gonna Rain should have been much bigger hits for Haze than they were. I bought the recently reissued Heart First album assuming it would be ropey but it is far better than it ought to be.
 
They Say It's Gonna Rain was such an undeserved chart miss. One of her best.

The video is quite the soap opera, highlighted by our Hazell tenderly oiling up her beau:

 
You Spin Me Round is just spectacular, even more so for the Dannii mash up which is one of my very favourite tracks EVER.

I've never liked any of Hazell Dean's output much. It's also one of the least appealing Nana efforts for me, so it's really no contest.

Throughout the liner notes for that she does continually scream "STOCKING PROBLEMS" for the flops she had. In fairness, she had a SERIES of bombs between "Whatever I Do" and "Who's Leaving Who". Indeed, most of those songs ended up on her second album YEARS after being released as singles! Two of them stopped at #41, which is always a shame, given that in those days, top 40 was the push you needed as it meant being played on the charts and, sometimes, getting a TOTP. That second album, Always, is really good as well- especially the deluxe remaster. Heart First I like a lot too, by the way.

I was always surprised that she was fighting for Turn It Into Love as the follow up to Who’s Leaving Who instead of Maybe given that Maybe was written for her while TIIL was a case of have a go at Kylie’s song.

I love the actual song Heart First, had never heard it before.
 
Yeah, but Turn It Into Love is fucking AMAZING as a song full stop. Even Hazell’s definitely inferior version...
 
I love Hazell on Twitter. The desperation is just JOYFUL. "GARY DAVIES- we need to talk!", "No 27 in the (er, independent) albums chart!", Sara Cox's RICTUS GRIN :D
