there's not really anyone being primed to take over, other than Burnham who seems divisive and whose path to becoming leader would be pretty tricky. Labour also don't really have a Tory-style process for deposing of a leader/PM do they, even in dire circumstances?

but also - what is the point of ousting him? yes Labour may be on course for a humiliating loss in 2029 but it's not like he doesn't represent the party. it's mostly made up of centrist/centre-right leaning MPs. bringing someone else in is unlikely to change the direction of policy or make them a progressive party with electorate appeal suddenly.

even Burnham, who has been progressive as mayor of Manchester, has plenty of form for flip-flopping in westminster and going wherever the wind is. there's no guarantee he'd run or lead on any kind of leftist platform.

I doubt there's much desire left in Labour anymore to pivot to a leftist platform but I do imagine they'll want to take the wind out of Ed Davey's SWAN PEDALO a bit.

A change of face could help them refresh the narrative ahead of the next election. It worked for BORIS. They've got plenty of time to groom a successor and plenty of currently anonymous young MPs to choose from.

Not that I think it'd work, but if they're polling like they are now a year out from an election, I could see bland, boring Keir being moved out of the way.

Lucy Powell winning would be a defeat for the McSweeney wing who have heavily pushed for Bridget Philipsson, but honestly who even cares at this point?

Seeing as she was one of two people Starmer was able to ditch in his big reshuffle, her now being his deputy is quite funny. He really can't catch a break.
 
I actually think Burham would do 10 times the job of Starmer, as he actually has some principles and managed to handle the ANDY BURNHAMS CLEAN AIR ZONE right-wing smear fairly competently.

I'm not 100% convinced he wants it though.
 
Powell is my MP. And quite likely to lose her seat at the next election, based on current polling. Not that that isn’t happening to most of them.

Powell seems to be a brighter spark in the battle of the brown bobs, with more of a desire to push for some change in how this government is run - I listened to her on the Guardian's Today in Focus but I wasn't fully convinced. but I guess it's a largely symbolic role anyway.
 
16.6% turnout suggests a lot of apathy but there's probably a dollop of wanting to see which way the wind blows too. It's still absolutely pitiful from a party that's supposed to be enjoying the fruits of a landslide election LAST YEAR and is, instead, fighting for its life.
 
surely they won't make her walk over this? can Labour survive a scandal of this magnitude immediately before the budget?

but unlike Ange she's not the housing minister... and it does seem like she just wasn't aware that she had to apply for a license that's area-specific, and did so once aware. maybe it'll be a mini storm pre-budget but I don't see anyone inside Labour forcing her out.

also... who GIVES A FUCK? the political discourse in the UK is insane. we all know every MP in Westminster has done far more self-serving things than this ADMIN ERROR with actual intent.

No no, we don't have one set of rules for the vaguely left wing of labour, and another for it's HARD RIGHT.

The ethics advisor said Ang didn't take the correct advice. It didn't matter that she was housing minister to the ethics advisor.

So we should absolutely demand the head (with disgusting bob) of Reeves if she's found similarly deficient
 
It's quite unfortunate for a story about the multi-storey home she owns in SOUTHWARK to break just before she unveils her manifesto breaking plans to make us all poorer though.
 
It feels like even more of a technicality than Ang, surely? As far as I understand it, she made no additional profit from the error, it’s just a paperwork issue?
 
While I agree that she essentially "did nothing" and it's an honest mistake, this coming so soon after the Rayner scandal and Starmer acting differently between the two is isn't going to play well in the hands of his rivals. I'm not convinced this will be able to stay under the rug. She's about to be headline news with her budget, so she can't exactly be quiet for a few weeks while it goes away.
 


This is a reasonably sensible move (though not nearly bold enough) but it amuses me that since income tax is devolved but NI isn't, this would be a pure tax cut for me. The SNP aren't going to follow suit and raise tax a few months before an election
