That’s an escalation. I assume resigning means he won’t stand in the leadership contest. Because that was the speculation just a few days ago.

I think he's probably been subject to some extremely frank conversations from colleagues since then. Anybody who thought he could actually survive a leadership challenge seems to have seen the writing on the wall when the scale of Burnham's victory came in.

I also wonder to what extent "I'll run in any leadership election" was just fighting talk to discourage people from actually having a leadership election.
 
Credit to him if he goes quietly. I know he's been rubbish, but he's the most honest PM we've had in an age.
 
well, in many ways he's also been very dishonest about a large number of things, and thrown a number of colleagues under the bus any time he needed to prolong his time in number 10, so most honest PM might be pushing it. maybe just by virtue of him not being a Tory. which is the only reason he's PM anyway.

It doesn't feel like a very popcorny event. Say what you like about the Tories (and you should), but they excel at drama. The decline of Liz Truss was Shakespearen.

Backed up by the fact the live page about the story on the BBC website has 5k viewers. I swear I've seen more on local news stories. It's just routine now.
 
Imagine being so shit that you have a massive majority and still get punted within 2 years. That's what you get for being a red Tory, I guess.
 
Incidentally, the popcorn isn't to bury Keir, it's my amusement at the Daily Mail and similar sorts seemingly deluding themselves they'd get an election out of it just because they think they should and they have massive double standards re the Tories doing this sort of thing. What I'm entirely hoping for is a leader who will call them out on their shit, hold press conferences where they get fact checked on live streaming and generally made to sweat like never before - it's a wild hope, a faint chance, but a hope none the less.
 
There is absolutely no way there will be a GE. The handover will be used to bury a lot of the stuff that Starmer either did or let happen; the Palantir deal with the NHS, the EHRC's "guidance" on trans people etc. Burnham will "draw a line" under it while not doing a thing to change any of it, lest he offend the billionaires.

I was just getting into it and then the Queen dies and then seemingly 10 days of Moopy were melted into the abyss? It just goes to the 18th - was everyone on here in deep deep mourning and not posting or Is There Some Sort Of Cover Up?
 
The psychosis that this country went into when the Queen died was probably the most normal part of Liz Truss' reign. Nothing political happened!
 
Yeah the government literally took a break during that period, so Liz's premiership is even shorter in substance than it gets credit for...
