It might benefit Burnham ultimately

There'll be grumblings regardless from some opposing parties about unelected PMs and we-need-a-general-election nonsense.

That's the narrative yeah - but it smacks of making people jump through hoops, causing distraction and ultimately stopping them getting on with the job. So I slightly call BS on it. The Daily Mail were running with 89% of Daily Mail readers think there should be an election this morning - not because there will be, but because they want to immediately get their readership foaming about Burnham rather than, ooh I don't know - actually hoping he might do a good job or something. It all needs calling out - all this playbook shit - because none of it is helping normal people in the daily challenges they have - it's just game playing by a privileged few.

I see both sides but ultimately a contest which Burnham wins anyway only drags things out and it probably looks better for Labour if they're united enough behind Burnham to just give it to him and get the ball rolling. it's not like being chosen by a few tens of thousand members is equivalent to having a mandate from the public ANYWAY.

I think the early part of it is com'ing who you are and sorting out presentation - because so much of this is perception based. One thing I will give Donald Trump is he lives in a narrative where he will not divert from the idea he is the greatest thing ever and EVERYTHING IS WAY BETTER NOW HE IS THERE even though nothing of economic value has changed for the better. It's no good being all frank with the electorate - they don't actually like it. They want an arm around them and a warm pint. That's why Nigel is such a danger - although I sense his moment is fast ebbing away now.

The electorate has proven time and time again that they don't want the truth, they don't want tough questions addressed, from the 'dementia tax' onwards, and they don't want 'things will get worse before they get better'. Keir thought people wanted retail politics that "touched lightly on their lives" but what they actually want is sunny vibes and a strong mission from the leadership to either cheer on or rail against.
