I know I keep saying this but SURELY we have to have a GE sooner rather than later? The tories are falling apart in front of our eyes.

Why would they call one they know they're going to lose badly though? They still have a massive majority and the power to call an election is in their hands.

I agree it's ludicrous, but I can't see any realistic alternative to them staggering on until next year.
 
Yeah, they’re not giving up any time soon. Unless there’s a rebellion to the point they can’t get anything through parliament, but we seem to be a way off from that.

They’ll cling on until the BITTER END.
 
Oh they'll go on as far as they can. The 1997 election was pretty much on the last day they could hold an election and they were a minority government. Maintaining power is their key political aim. They won't deliberately hold it in winter, so autumn 24 seems very likely.

Christ knows what carnage they can reek in a year. Thank goodness for the checks and balances we have in the UK, to keep these corrupt loons in check. It's a shame we need the courts, commitees and the Lords to restrain their worst excuses.
 
The only way a GE happens sooner is if 31 Tories could be convinced to vote against the government in a confidence motion, 61 abstain, or some combination of the two.
 
At this point Starmer needs to really lean into the leader in waiting role. Although quietly letting the Tories self destruct, is a fairly strong tactic.
 
An early GE would require the Tories to put the good of the country ahead of their own party and their own individual gain.

I think we’re all giving them too much credit.

The man was given a peerage, so why be a member of the cabinet which requires actual hard work and responsibility, when you can walk away and keep your peerage you were given as a backhander, slope off when your behaviour is being brought into question, stick the knife into the PM because he turned against your meal ticket (Boris), and blame it all on the environment

Public Affairs at my work reckon the same. The latest they can hold an election is January 2025 but older people are less likely to vote in the dark so Autumn it will be. They'll plan some tasty tax cuts for the Spring Budget and hope for the best.
 
It’s the first time in a long time I agree with Sajid Javid. Albeit not the way that he said it.

Good luck to them getting away with tax cuts not blowing up in their face when public services are so visibly on their knees!
 
A shame but she's seen the way the wind is blowing and knows that the political environment is being made toxic on purpose.
 
Kay Burley strikes me as someone who remains in a job because she knows where the bodies are buried. Do I mean that metaphorically? Not necessarily.
