I don't get it though - apparently we're now going to be able to choose from 375ml, 500ml (also a new size), 568ml and 750ml of sparkling wines? Why? Who needs that choice?
 
Yeah...I don't trust anything he says...If there's even a slight rise in the polls they will call one earlier. They will also want to keep Labour guessing and have them as ill-prepared as possible.
 
There's still an opportunity that he'll be backed into a corner with the Rwanda policy, which is due a third reading in the coming weeks.

Reform UK planning to stand in every seat is surely likely to make the rightwing Tories double down on the changes they want made to the bill. I'm not sure how likely it is any of them would join Reform UK, but it's a bargaining tool, and Rishi Sunak isn't going to want to take that risk. He's made such a fuss of keeping the Rwanda scheme alive that he's not in a position now to hope the matter quietly goes away. It's going to come back and bite him at some point (soon, hopefully), he has no wiggle room on it, and I think that if/once it falls apart, he's done.
 
At the end of the day they want to keep their opponent's guessing.

The article says they are working on the assumption that there will be a general election in the second half of the year but to assume they won't call one earlier if they think there is suddenly an opportunity or they can limit the the damage somehow is incredibly political naive

If my record on the Deathlists threads didn't contraindicate it, I'd put a cheeky fiver on a major defection from the Conservatives to Reform UK before we reach the spring. I think they're so inherently racist that it wouldn't be Braverman or Badenoch but that leaves plenty of options.

Robert Jenrick seems cretinous enough to do it and Reform UK very much speak his language. If he doesn’t get what he wants with the Rwanda bill, I think he’ll defect. I’m unsure how influential he is, but he’s certainly enough of a “name” to potentially see a few others follow.
 
There’ll be no defections by anyone who thinks they’ll cling on at the next GE.
They all think they could be the next leader.

This makes sense but some of them are egotistical enough to believe that they are ballot box gold as an individual, rather than as a Conservative.

Yes, this is exactly what made me think of Robert Jenrick. Would he stay in the hope of a senior role in the next iteration of the Tory party? Maybe. But I think he possibly sees his "potential" being stifled, and the lure of being a bigger fish in a smaller pond would be more of a pull.

this is pretty mad - the 38.7k salary threshold that will apply to migrants from April will mean 95% of the 8500 hospitality workers who came to the UK last year would be ineligible. job vacancies across hospitality are already at 8%, 10% for head chefs and 21% for production chefs. the trade body of course has not been consulted by the government. so many smaller businesses will have to close due to shortages of staff, all so the government can cut migration by 300k.

or in other words, a bigger proportion of migrants will be the refugees and immigrants the government hates so much, while skilled migrants who contribute to our economy immediately on arrival won't make it in. these are the people who can help Sunak claim growth in the economy for fuck's sake. it's lunacy.
 
The salary threshold is already NONSENSE anyway. In my industry, with the level the government pays an interpreter (court/ police/ medical etc.) it’s impossible for a public service interpreter to meet the threshold unless they work something stupid like 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year, 6 hours a day- entirely impossible to achieve, let alone sustain.
