Btw I cannot describe the mess that is going on with their embassy's tweets here since yesterday. Or the attitude. Or the public asking them if their account is being handled by their children. The latest is literally tagging foreign office to "GET A GRIP" because "we've never seen you lighting up your fountains in our colours".
 
Cannot wait for sad, snivelling Belarus authority to be hoisted by its own petard when this is all over.
 
I don't know whether they'll be able to muster enough forces to turn the tide and bring down Kyiv, but in a wider sense this is going to go down like an absolute sack of shit with an already frustrated Belarusian population. They have no skin in this game, there's no justification for it other than Lukashenko cowtowing to Putin. It makes him look even more weak, and now Belarusian soldiers will die fighting their neighbours with whom they have historically never really had any beef.

Liz Truss has said she would support Britons wanting to go to Ukraine to help it fight the Russian invasion.

In an interview on BBC One’s Sunday Morning programme, the UK foreign secretary replied “absolutely” when asked whether she would back anyone wanting to volunteer to help the Ukrainians fighting for their freedom.

She told the programme: “That is something people can make their own decisions about. The people of Ukraine are fighting for freedom and democracy, not just for Ukraine but for the whole of Europe.

“Absolutely, if people want to support that struggle I would support them in doing that.”

NATO special troops are on the ground, including from the UK. In Ukrainian colours. All Russian/Ukrainian speakers to blend in. NATO has to tread carefully but what Ukraine needs now is airpower or a no-fly zone. The Russian groundforce are all conscripts and most don't even know why they are there. Lots have surrendered/defected.

This is a messier war than most of you realise.
 
The Ukrainian foreign minister made a live statement broadcast on the BBC earlier. It managed to be compelling, informative and sympathetic. A lot of big fuck you's to Germany.

Their media game is on point. Very seductive to the Western audiences.

Interesting that this is happening on the same day Belarussians are voting on constitutional changes which will increase Lukashenko's power, ensure he can't be prosecuted even when out of office, and also allow Russia to house nuclear weapons in Belarus. The changes will be voted through but it's also given the people an opportunity to get out and protest.
 
@Loufoque ’s story has stirred me the most. Shocked to the core that Russians are being shown footage of Ukrainians surrendering and Ukrainian people cheering the Russians in.

It’s a chilling reminder that in this age of fast information and data, propaganda is STILL a very powerful and effective tool to keep despots in power and popular. Not even so much that they can effectively control the narrative still, but that so many people are willing to listen to whatever is fed to them.
 
No one else kind of panicking about the nuclear escalations?

All I can think about at the moment is "I don't want to survive a nuclear war, and I kind of want something in place as a contingency if one starts"

So far any reaction to this has been to silence me for "fear mongering"

I'm currently watching a documentary about the current events and they showed a woman saying that everything will be fine and there will never be a war as long as Putin is in charge and not only she thinks that but everyone she knows. I wanted to smash my TV.

I'm not panicking. I'm fairly confident nuclear weapons will never be used in a world where multiple countries host such devices.

It's not a positive step certainly but I think he's just activated the unit that includes various things including nuclear defenses, rather than specifically activating just nuclear weapons.
