Every morning I wake up this whole ghastly mess makes me feel sick before I even check anything. That constant sense of dread and helplessness. I'm aware some of it comes from a place of selfishness, because there's this horrible cloud of doubt about how things might escalate and have a direct effect on our lives, although I suppose that's normal. And while it's heartening to see so much unification in condemning Russia collectively, the fact the overriding strategy is "we will help any which we can but ultimately you have to get on with it" when it comes to the nitty gritty stuff, because of imminent threats from this backwards entity (and obviously the fact defending airspace equals European war of sorts) makes you feel like a useless spectator of a tragic, pointless battle.

I get where @Cloud is coming from worrying about worldwide DOOM, and even though it's important to recognise them as negative, totally unhelpful thoughts, it's not really a strange thing to be thinking now. Even in this thread only a couple of weeks back we had some people saying he "probably won't invade". And while nuclear is entirely different, there's a bit of a worry about backing a deranged animal into a corner.

I’m totally with you. I firmly believe one of his aides will put a bullet in Putin’s head rather than condemn their family to death in a nuclear Holocaust if it came to it, but the worry is there and I never thought I’d ever have to even consider the threat of nuclear war in my lifetime. Of course, having a pissweak leader and knowing Britain is mired in Russian influence doesn’t help, either.
I have to look at the positives - the EU are stronger than ever, the US have really stepped up, Ukraine has an absolute hero leading them and they’re so united and defiant that Putin will never truly get the victory he craves even if he takes Kyiv.

Weirdly (and I'm not trying to nominate myself for the altruism award here), I'm not really thinking about how it might affect me personally. There's something about horrible things happening in Ukraine / to Ukrainians which always upsets me terribly so they're my main concern right now. I don't know why Ukraine specifically but there you go...
 
Somewhat ironically, Armenia relies on Russia for military support since Azerbaijan annexed a big chunk of their land.

Armenia faces destruction/occupation from Azerbaijan, Turkey and/or Russia itself, if it loses Russian military support. There are literally Russia troops stationed in Armenia.

It is not a member of NATO and it now knows what happens to non-NATO members with no allies if they anger Russia.

The Glasgow Film Festival have had their arse handed to them on Tw*tter for cancelling the planned showing of 2 Russian films and I'd have to agree - unless they can demonstrate funding by oligarchs or political statements by the directors, they're punching down. If they can prove either of these things, they'd have been the case when the programme was announced so do yr research etc.

I know the Taliban made that somewhat surprising statement against the invasion, but I presume the seat of Afghanistan at the UN is still occupied by the departed government.

I think political statements by the directors are fine as they're highly unlikely to be PRO-KREMLIN

A little Googling suggests that Eritrea is on the verge of fairly serious sanctions itself over it’s behaviour around the war in Ethiopia and that Russia are the main ones arguing against sanctions and/or willing to trade with them anyway.

I can understand state ballet or opera cancellations given that they are literally run by the Russian government, but otherwise that seems like a dumb thing to do.

I didn't mean any political statements at all - I don't expect people in the arts to be apolitical. But if any of them had been giving it pro-Putin guff, I would understand. As far as I can tell from my Twitter feed (which contains a couple of film festival veterans who basically live in the GFT for a fortnight or so), this isn't the case.

Oh yes, of course. Me too. However I don't think I've ever seen a Russian film - especially not one likely to be shown at a film festival - with an ISN'T THE RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT SUPER spin

Oh yes, it's happening, our ministry of culture canceled everything that was meant to do in coordination with Russia including the Bolshoi's performances, Italy canceled the conductor of La Scala Di Milano, the Venice Biennale canceled all Russian representation, and am sure there will be more that I don't know of.

Just noted that the UK lost a UN resolution regarding the chagos islands by 116 votes to 6.

It takes something special to be less popular than us.
 
One of the Russian restos here has a big placard in the window in support of Ukraine, which I guess is par for the course these days.

Cancelling ONEGIN at the local opera house is absurd.
