I'm not really sure if banning oil and gas from Russia is a good idea or not.

Russia will continue to sell their product to China and India. They won't go short of customers. It'll drive a fairly pointless spike in prices when world demand is the same and world supply is the same. Things will settle down again once new supply lines have been organised.

It'll basically mean two medium term consequences once a new world of supply chains is sorted:

- EU/UK/US will be less reliant on Russia, so they can't threaten us with that
- Russia will be less reliant on EU/UK/US, so any economic sanctions we make will matter to them much less

I can't place it as a good idea or bad idea for that reason. Short term pain, medium term... meh

this is interesting. not sure what i think either. at this point it seems like it'll drive the price of energy up and probably make europe more reliant on us imports which will probably open the door for more fracking there because it's better to continue fucking the planet instead.

Russia and its trolls have so far not managed to mobilise any public opinion against helping Ukraine, and the far right parties they support are now weakend because of their association with Russia. Let’s hope the sanctions don’t backfire in EU with higher inflation and unemployment that might turn the public against the sanctions.

Putin was going to invade whether he gave this speech or not. If he’d have capitulated he’d have broken this promise anyway; look at the response from the Ukrainian people, they’re prepared to fight and die for a free Ukraine despite this war not being of their choosing.
