So far they’ve used soldiers from different minorities which they know have no power when it comes to public opinion. A lot of the reservist would probably come from ”the heartland”, and if things go badly, more people would turn against the war. This is what they’ve tried to avoid so far.

By pure coincidence () the Russian Duma added refusing to join the military during war, martial law or armed conflict into the criminal code yesterday. Punishable by up to 3 years in prison.

Voluntary surrendering to the enemy will now get you 10 years in prison.

He won’t do it. Ordering a nuclear strike involves a number of people, all of whom would basically be signing a death warrant for their entire families. The war clearly doesn’t have enough support in Russia for them to be prepared to make that sacrifice. There’d be mutiny if he tried to take it that far.

Over 1000 have been arrested for protesting. When that's how a government treats its own people, you can start to understand why many who oppose the war choose to say/do nothing.
