The War in Ukraine (1 Viewer)

I've known about Taylor Swift for years! (thats what this is about right?)
Taylor Swift and the SWIFT banking system are totally different. One of them is a borderline evil entity, much beloved by Russian oligarchs and other sinister people, whereas the other lets you send money internationally.

The other worry I've seen floated about quite a bit over the past 24 hours, is whether China might see this as a chance to seize Taiwan...

the thought has crossed my mind. with the US and allies occupied elsewhere it would be the perfect time to advance in Hong Kong and Taiwan. it would seem a little rushed though and the Chinese don't do rushed

Thing with being an interconnected world is now also having friends in Finland and Sweden to worry about.

I don't like how the next phase of this could involve those people going dark

I saw earlier that the Ukrainian government advised they think Russia plans to capture government buildings and disrupt the electricity network in Kyiv to create panic and a huge exodus of refugees.

Looks like it may very well be starting. The Guardian reporting that one of the Kyiv's power plants has been destroyed.

The Russian army has reportedly destroyed the Kyiv thermal power plant, says Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko, a sign that Russia’s army is targeting critical infrastructure in the capital city.

This announcement follows another report from Klitschko that five blasts were heard in three to five minutes near a power station located north of Kyiv, reported the Telegraph.

“The emergency services are under way. We’re finding out the details,” said Klitschko of the five blasts. “The situation now - without exaggeration - is threatening for Kyiv. The night, close to the morning, will be very difficult.”

This looks like Italy agreed on SWIFT on the condition that their luxury goods are exempted from the sanctions.
Germany still says No though. Cyprus officials deny any reluctance on their side and say will agree with any measures, SWIFT included. No idea about Hungary's current position.

Am watching a live news special on Ukraine and they said they just got a message from Reuters saying that Zelensky and the Kremlin are now discussing a ceasefire.
I've checked Reuters but they haven't issued sth on their twitter, but this was posted on BBC a little later.

Zelensky - Ukraine ready to discuss ceasefire

A spokesman for Ukrainian President Zelensky has just said the country is prepared to hold ceasefire and peace talks with Russia immediately.
He said Russian and Ukrainian officials are currently discussing a time and place for talks to be held.

Russia will only agree to talks if the entire Ukrainian army surrender.

I worry about any attempt by Russia to draw Zelensky out. They obviously want him dead.
Which would be a massive mistake. They'll make martyr of him and solidify resistance to any Russian occupation of Ukraine, and solidify public pressure the world over for governments to act in the strongest possible terms.

Given Putin's state of mind though, I think it's still incredibly likely to happen.

So, I've been following the progress of two people's escape from Ukraine, as one of them is a friend of a close friend of mine, so had interesting insight as to what's going on. They've been making sporadic appearances in all sorts of news outlets too.

He's lived in Kyiv for a few years, was out of the country last week but was due to come back anyway and like most, decided it would be fine. But since then they've been trying to escape the country. They got a lift from Kyiv to Lviv yesterday, and have spent all day today trying to cross the Polish border from there. Roughly 15 hours into trying, they're still at the border. There's thousands of people there, with no food, water, toilets and they're just stuck.

Early in the day they hit a police checkpoint set up to send people of fighting age back, but his British passport got him through ("with thanks for the military equipment provided")

Updates have stopped now though due to lack of phone charge. I don't even know them directly, but I hope they've made it.

I disagree with the people saying Putin has gone insane. I don't think he's mentally ill, I think he's just an evil man with who's completely consumed by his ego. People like him are much more common than we think.

This is so terrifying. I can't imagine how Ukrainians are feeling, not least about some of these Western "allies" who have proven useless.

We need to stop pretending Putin will be satisfied with the 'Russian' portion of Ukraine (or even Ukraine entirely) and treating this situation as such. This is exactly what happened with Hitler even if the historical factors are different. In 1938 he annexed Austria and the German portion of former Czechoslovakia, and the Western nations allowed him to because he told them at a conference in Munich that it would stop there, at these regions that were part of the former German empire and thus "culturally German". Cut to a few months later when he invaded the non-German portion of Czechoslovakia after saying he wouldn’t. This is why we gave Poland the guarantee that we would go to war with Germany should they annex them too, and that's what happened.
