The War in Ukraine (3 Viewers)

Can we change the entire banner to the Ukrainian flag? That entire country is just one collective QOL.

Glory to them all!

What I love is that there’s no fear there whatsoever. They look confident, they know they’re winning.
I don't know if it's confidence or the sense about who's winning, I think it's primarily a mix of morals and purpose, they act on duty to protect everything that's important to them from an invader, and it is the complete lack of dignity and purpose from the other side that makes such a sharp contrast.

The Truss thing is being a bit overstated. She's an idiot but she's there because of Putin's contribution to Brexit and the subsequent Tory governments. He loves that she's a dipshit.

Very distressing scenes in Kharkiv. Putin is a war criminal. Russia is a war-crime state.

Can I ask if anyone has donated or is considering donating, which charity you're thinking of? The Red Cross seems to be an easy one, but I'd prefer a smaller one, or at least one where how the money is being spent is a little more transparent.

I know the Ukrainian embassy in the UK has set up the following. I used it as hopefully it is more of a direct line.

IOC recommends to no participation of Russian / Belarusian athletes and officials at all in international sports, not as „neutral“ athletes either.

Next step of the screws being tightened.

What's the gap between a recommendation and a rule? When does it actually become a thing and not just words? Because that's a big leap for them, at least in recent years.

It's a recommendation as it comes from the Executive Board - it's not a rule as it isn't something that has been approved by an IOC session.

But the recommendation is of course based on the Olympic Truce and it's pretty strongly worded at that. Expect all (well, most) Federations to follow suit rather quickly.

Listening to this gobshite from Russia at the UN General Assembly is quite awful.

Are they actually trying to give some reasoning now, for the whiplash from "we'renotinvading we'renotinvading we'renotinvading" just a week ago...?

Whilst I can believe Africans are having trouble crossing borders I’ve also heard a lot of these reports are disinformation spread by Russia to discredit Ukraine’s allies.
I thought so when I first saw this on Madonna's (!) instagram stories this morning because she's been known to be a bit over the top and emotional and sometimes posts stuff that's not yet been verified.

However, this is now on the BBC so I'm inclined to think it's verified.

I donated direct to the National Bank of Ukraine account they set up for the armed forces, and was a little worried afterwards that I'd get flagged somewhere... then our Foreign Minister came out and said it's up to individuals whether they want to fly to Ukraine to defend it, so think I'm in the clear. :D

Yes, my initial thought was that the friends that were sharing it were unkowingly spreading Russian propaganda, but the situation for these students has been reported by mainstream media here aswell.

The EU application is interesting. They 100% deserve it, but I'd be kinda surprised if the EU actually let them in.

If nothing else, it'd be a huge slap in the face to Albania and North Macedonia.

There's no reason the EU won't let them join...

...after 5 years of vetting, and several more years of ensuring they can maintain financial conditions within the ERM

yeah - there's a longstanding history of Ukraine taking lots of students from Africa and other parts of the Global South. Add that to the number of already displaced people from the Middle East seeking refuge in the Ukraine, you've got a sizeable number of people stuck/having an additionally hard time getting out.

I think it's a real story, I've seen the people the story is about sharing footage on twitter and making posts about it, but I was under the impression that they finally made it out.

BBC News:

We've just learned that US President Joe Biden has held a call with allies to discuss Russia's war on Ukraine.

Joining the call were Canada's PM Justin Trudeau, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian PM Mario Draghi, Japan's PM Fumio Kishida, Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Poland's President Andrzej Duda, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and UK PM Boris Johnson.

Sounds quite DRAMATIC, but it's probably just an update call.
