Theatre 2026 (4 Viewers)

Yeah, never gonna get tickets to THAT. Was going to start a. 2026 thread with some updates but haven’t got around to it.
 
This year so far I have returned to the Palladium Panto, which was fun but ultimately the same as before.

The Producers, which I had never seen on stage before. It is MUCH better than the film of the musical. Got a great deal for that. Would go again but hopefully not a matinee where the average audience age was about 78.

Yesterday I saw the play End at the National with Clive Owen and Saskia Reeves. Very emotional and I teared up quite a few times :(

I haven't made any plans for a Westend trip this year yet, but I've just booked tickets for the touring productions of Miss Saigon for this Saturday and Legally Blonde in July.
 
I'm really keen for Les Liaisons Dangereuses. looks HOT! need to book a London trip around it pronto
 
I saw a fantastic production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses over 20 years ago with Rupert Penry-Jones and Dervla Kirwan which absolutely was HOT. I didn't realise Aiden Turner was in a production of it. That would certainly get my flaps in a flutter.
 
Rebecca Lucy Taylor/Self Esteem in Teeth n' Smiles is the show which is most tempting me to a trip up. With Jinkx Monsoon in End Of The Rainbow already booked, naturally.

I haven't been to any show in London since I saw Wicked probably 12 or 13 years ago now so i'm very VERY excited.
 
I hear tell that Death Becomes Her is getting a West End transfer with Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard reprising their roles, then Hannah Waddingham will be taking over as Madeline Ashton.

Oh it’s just a bunch of various boring circumstantial things. Post-COVID I caught theatre bug more than ever and was never happy unless I had at least 10 upcoming things in the diary.

The friends I used to regularly go drinking with mostly now work from home and rarely venture beyond their local high streets unless forced, so I don’t see them as often. One of my friends moved away but works one day a week in London, so we make a point to meet up for either a film or a show on Wednesdays.

My job changed a couple of years ago and I work every third weekend, so I get a Monday and Wednesday off in lieu on those weeks - Wednesdays off means I can fit in a matinee for cheap before meeting said friend in the evening. Am also still renting and sharing, and I hate sitting at home while my flatmate is working from home as I don’t have run of my own place. That could possibly change in the next year.
 
Anyway, today I saw two shows. High Noon with Billy Crudup and Oh, Mary! Loving so many of these 90-100 min one act plays becoming more common.

I hadn’t seen High Noon the film for well over 25 years, so I watched it last weekend. Didn’t really need to as they’ve changed so much. Interesting use of having a handful of random songs in there, most notably Bruce Springsteen’s I’m on Fire. It was good, worth it with the lovely January discount deal, but don’t think I’d pay full price.

Oh, Mary! is another perfect one for Moopy theatre lovers. Heard a lot about this but still kind of stayed away from any spoilers. A laugh a minute, and I can only assume that Cole Escola had a lot of inspiration from Blackadder, as that’s probably the closest style comparison I could make :D
 
Paddington again tonight in what was my original booking. It was even more wonderful the second time :disco: But unless I win one of those lotteries, o don’t think there’s much hope of going again soon.

Does anyone know how the West End run of Oh Mary! has been selling up to now?

Obviously the Broadway run has form for short-ish runs in the lead role, but they've only had established stars in the role.

I don’t think it’s been selling out. It hasn’t had much major discounting other than the usual seasonal New Year/Theatre Week deals.

When I went there were entire rows in the premium stalls that were empty, but that was a Wednesday.

I must say Alexander Mason Park really was incredible.
 
I don't doubt it, but the fact that he isn't really a name outside London theatre circles is probably not helping.
 
I saw it a few weeks ago and loved it so much

Mason was sensational but I loved everyone else too, and the script was fab. Good daft fun. Shout out to Dino Fetcher's nice big arse. I despair at how bad the reviews have been here.

Unsure about how Tate will be. If she's prepared to lose a lot of her usual shtick I can see her working well, but I'm unsure she'll be up for that.
 
I was thinking of a little midweek trip for a couple of shows, Oh Mary! being very much on the list. I also want to do Les Liaisions Dangereuses, but nothing available quite FITS time wise unless I do a weekend.

Definitely do Oh Mary! before Mason leaves. I describe it as an even more camp version of Blackadder.
 
We saw Hercules tonight. Actually really enjoyed it! Wasn’t expecting it to be so FUNNY.

Oddly the huge audience didn’t laugh as hard as we did as there were quite a lot of puns. They were probably either tourists or just thick. It was much more friendly on different levels to multiple generations compared to Frozen, which while good, was mostly just suited to children. Also it a lot better than the film itself, with the humour more being akin to The Emperor’s New Groove.

Has anyone else see it?

I just can’t see myself ever going to that show at all. I’m sure it’s fun for the hen-do crowd, but it just looks crap.
 
Went to Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula The Sea Witch tonight.

This had POTENTIAL, but ultimately was too long and a little bit of a mess, relying too much on the audience coming in already drunk. Still, lovely costumes and King Triton had some fabulous pecs.

FOUR AND A HALF HOURS waiting in a queue today for Hamilton tickets for Leslie Odom Jr’s 9 week run in the West End. 124,000th in the queue too, and when I got there, loads of tickets available anyway.

WTF was that all about?
 
With Paddington being insanely popular, my friend just asked me about returns policies because she’s booking for her son’s birthday for March 2027.

Her other mum friend is already being flaky and saying they shouldn’t book so far ahead because “she might not be able to make it”. It’s already practically sold out until Christmas, especially for anyone wanting more than 2 affordable seats together for a weekend.

OK, so emergencies happen and probably more often for people with young kids. But when someone simply won’t commit to one Saturday afternoon a WHOLE YEAR in advance, now you're just being awkward.
