I’ve gone to the local walk-in centre with an ear/sinus infection that just keeps getting worse and worse. I’m mainlining Ibuprofen just to snatch an hour or two of sleep in between the searing pain.

Got here and about six other people are evidently in with the exact same thing. 🤷‍♂️

Yea its proper lurgy season, fairly certain I've just had something mild enough but I've been tired all week.

It's passed now though which means back to gym. Ergh.

Best thing I found here is that pharmacists can now hand over the antibiotics for it bypassing the entire GP route.

I had an ear infection for a whole year (2024) triggered by winter viruses. The pharmacist told me it's become a remarkably common side effect.

since yesterday I've been coming down with a really nasty cough and general cold... which is OK, but there are two very attractive men I want to meet and I keep having to POSTPONE!

I still can't shift the last of this cough. I'm back on a bottle for it, one that claims to loosen up the mucus which is, frankly, the worst phrase I've typed this year.

@the octy and the ivy and other Scottish persons of interest….

Is it true that Aldi sells decent tablet up there?
Yer. It's well decent. I was spoiled as a kid by years of church coffee mornings with tablet made by old dears with recipies handed down through generations so I can be well fussy but the one I got in Aldi a couple of months back really hit the spot.

We had a local estate agent come round to the shop yesterday to discuss our selling :(

Why are you selling up? I know you've discussed the process but I think I've missed the why?

We've both had enough. It doesn't really work as partnership. It would be much better if it was owned by 1 person, or maybe 2 friends. But as a partnership working in it together it's very stressful and now we've lost our other adult, it means no time off together unless we close.

Mandy's also been offered her old job back on far better money. And if I'm working for minimum wage, I'd rather do it in a job where I can go in, do my job, leave and not worry about it again until the next day.

As a business it's fine, it's never made a loss and we do ok. It's just not the dream I thought it would be.

And the way things are going with the economy, and tourism on the island, we'd rather get out now while it's doing ok than leave it until it may be unsellable.

Could you not hire someone to replace Mandy and the other adult. Surely there is more than one adult on the island?

We've tried, we've had 4 other adults working for us since we opened, the one that's left was the best, but the others were useless.
To be honest, I knew when I was at the vets I wasn't mentally cut out to manage people, but I still did it when I opened the shop.
It's not just about the staff. It's about my own mental health, and I'm really struggling with having the shop.
On the busy days it's fine, and adrenaline gets us through, but the quiet days are soul destroying. I just don't want to do it anymore.

Yeah that's understandable. I quit at least once a year, it's usually my business partner's fault.

You know what's best for you at tje end of the day, but I will tease you with one parting bit of wisdom. All of the best things in business have happened to me just as I'm about to give up. #linkedin #thoughtoftheday #bizpiration #thoughtleadership #fudge

Mrs Wife’s business absolutely tanked when “the country opened up again”. Literally a cliff edge overnight. I sit on a Not On The High Street fb group and it is just spirals of misery. It costs so much to make money that you end up pricing out your customers.

The difference with us tho, is we rely heavily on tourism and footfall on the island. And that's declining every single year because of ferry prices. That's not going to get any better.

All our costs have gone up a huge amount since opening, and that's also not going to get better. We are almost at the limit of what we can charge.

Now feels like a good time to get out. At least I've tried it, and I've enjoyed it for the most part. But I'm ready for something far less stressful.

Exactly this! Our prices have gone up a lot since we opened nearly 5 years ago. And we're at the point now where we are about to price ourselves out.

So I've bought myself and Mr Sheena for Christmas the much advertised BRICK device that blocks off apps on your phone for periods of time and supposedly helps with focus and distraction. Ordered Monday, arrived yesterday. Since yesterday, I have had NINE emails off them trying to get me to buy another/ tell a friend/ join the Brick community, all outside the 6 they sent about delivery in the days preceding.

1. Why do companies do this? It's just instantly made me reach for the Unsubscribe button, but perhaps most importantly:
2. HOW THE FUCK IS THAT HELPING WITH DISTRACTION?

People often ask me why I don't have a franchise and it's exactly this. I know I'd be good at it, but I like working 4 days, no weekends and mostly just switching off when I finish work.

Quite simply, you're never entirely "off" when you own your own business. I went to a funeral yesterday and was mostly OOO but still had a couple of "sorry, what do I do with this?" emails. (Which is entirely fine, by the way). I then woke up at 5 today and first thing I did was go through my email. The worry never really leaves you.

HOWEVER, what I will say, is that putting the right structure in to avoid being available all the time, or being constantly on call really helps. I turn everything off at 5 and unless there's something they need me for, my team deals with the rest (we're open til 11). Switching off those notifications is vital to me.

100% this. I did it years ago. I have no notifications on my phone full stop. I can access email via a browser if I need to, but nothing pings or buzzes me, I have to consciously go looking for it. Stopped me automatically opening and reading emails at 11pm and going to bed worried.

I have to have notifications on mine during the day because I don't sit at my desk 9-5, but I'm strict about switching them off outside the hours I'm expected to be at work.

And EVERY time I do the latter, or if I'm covering til 11pm for some reason, I do exactly what you've just said and end up worrying about shit and not sleeping...

Yeah honestly I'd say never open a franchise. You're very sensible not doing it!
