TikTok BANNED

For the record, I say ban it everywhere. Video scrolling is the most braindead thing you can do.

Although I'm aware there are alternatives and VPNs can easily bypass it, I say GOOD RIDDANCE TO BAD RUBBISH

I've used it before, but deleted it. There was some stuff I liked, but it automatically came up with horrendous right wing or conspiracy shit. I don't need that crap. I lost the energy to build an algorithm very quickly.
 
I'm not sure a ban citing security concerns over China will work particularly well, particularly as Americans are simply migrating over to another Chinese owned app. :eyes:

Well quite. They've dominated cheap shit shopping and video sharing for this long. I doubt a little thing like a US ban would touch the sides.

Oh, I’m a serial YouTube scroller and they just pop up al the time whether I want them or not. I’ve never understood Instagram because the interface is so dreadful. You can’t even fucking rewind a video!
 
My YouTube front page when I log on is just Shorts right in your face… and clearly knows what I watch:

Oh yeah, both are much worse user experiences than TikTok, but that's because they feel (and obviously are) so tacked on to something else rather than being designed around short videos in the first place.
 
All apps affiliated with the Chinese government need to be banned. Instagram is better anyway.

VPNs can bypass it and it won't be deleted off of people's phones but the app will stop being updated in the US (likely making it increasingly buggy) and American creators won't be able to monetize their stuff and creators elsewhere in the world will suffer from losing the revenue generated by the American audience. Otherwise I would have said this is a massive opportunity for content creators based basically everywhere else in the English speaking world but honestly I think it could sink it. This feels monumental in its own way but most of us are old enough now to see platforms peak and then trough or disappear entirely.

To someone who doesn't use TikTok, it is hard to describe the extent to which Reels is an extremely poor imitation. The content on TikTok is just so much more varied and the algorithm is second to none in terms of working out what you like. I wouldn't recommend anyone download it fresh at this point though - all of the things that make it great are also the things that make it the most brain-scrambling, addictive app i've ever used.


I've only really been following this from extreme distance - is there any real substance to the reasoning being provided for the ban (the stuff about TikTok's ties to China being a risk to US national security) or is it just US politicians 1. being thick or 2. hiding other motives?

Although it does seem rather short sighted by Emperor Trump because Tik Tok is the #1 reason for the rise in backwards alt-right thinking amongst a portion of the YOOF... something nobody saw coming
