They actually should have been way bigger here in the UK with the album I always felt.

It was a hit eventually to be fair. Although not until Waterfalls was released in 95.

And of course FanMail was massive - IIRC it sold just shy of 1m copies in the UK, which must be a record for an R&B group

I believe Fanmail sold around 400K here. Are we accepting Eternal’s ‘Always and Forever’ as rnb? If so it shifted 1.4 million.

Why do I have memories of it selling 900k? That and Whitney’s MLIYL, same year.

Maybe I’m confused with the No Scrubs single.

I'd be surprised if it sold close to a million in the UK. It was the #28 of the year it was released and didn't chart particularly well after that year.

I’m now speculating that it might have gone 3x platinum which is where my memory of 900k comes from even though certifications don’t always = sales

:square: I wonder what I’m confusing it with.

I do think I remember the album coming out prior to No Scrubs though, which is why the album debuted low. It rose into the Top 10 when No Scrubs took off (also a slow burner) and then returned to the Top 10 after Unpretty and hovered about the rest of the year

Obviously I can’t be trusted with any stats can I, but im pretty sure I’m right about that bit!

Regarding Always & Forever, I would class that as an R&B album, but I’d class the All Saints debut in the same way, and that sold 1.4m as well, according to Wiki

Always & Forever is an odd one because the album is TOTALLY RnB but the singles were remixed to be pop for the main part...

ANYWAY, Creep really is an 11/10 if ever there was one, as my learned friend Ellie said earlier. UNDENIABLE. The moment when their SPUNK got the truly best level of production. Just perfection.

Interestingly, although Wikipedia states Whitney's MLIYL is triple platinum and gives a shipment figure of 900k, the BPI only has it at double platinum.

Fanmail never sold close to a million here- in fact, it was considered a semi- flop. They didn't really push anything after Dear Lie, which bombed...

OT: I’m now wasting my time for no good reason trying to decide if the second and third Five Star albums are too pop to be shoehorned into r’n’b. Silk & Steel sold 1.2 million. The debut ‘Luxury Of Life’ definitely works as a poppy soul/r’n’b effort.

I was actually thinking of Eternal in comparison when I looked up the CSC sales as I know Eternal regularly sold about 900k each outing (I know they did go higher too).

So I'd say their potential wasn't quite reached even if it's obvious they were still successful.

The first album is one of the greatest British soul/RnB albums of all times. Silk and Steel is pure pop, though. Between The Lines I could argue either way...

Yes, the numbers Eternal were doing as both a 4 piece and 3 piece made the Bennetts’ ultimate self sabotage crazy but not to derail the thread I guess….

Sounds more like The Writing's on the Wall than FanMail - I'm sure that sits pretty above 1m, and hung around for a good two years.

Another slow burn! Wasn’t Say My Name like the 4th single or something?
