omg I didn't know we had such a thread!

I know it's not up there with her BEST work - and having really thrown myself into Tori since beginning The Journey™ (driving in my Saab, naturally), I can also hear the vocal strain on this record and in places on Scarlet's Walk that didn't exist prior to that. but I can't help but love everything about The Beekeeper really - the sweet, laid-back sound, the plethora of guitars and backing vox, the simple melodies and catchy hooks. and then - because it's Tori Amos - you listen to the lyrics and realise it's still kinda dark, even though it doesn't sound it.

the title track is a proper late 90s Tori classic. wildly out of place here. Cars and Guitars is my JAM. huge fan of IRELAND. General Joy and Ribbons Undone are lush. Witness is long but reaches lift-off eventually. Parasol a total treat obv. I read back the sync listen thread and was surprised at some of you guys' faves - tracks that barely register with me at all like Jamaica Inn. The Power of Orange Knickers is gash. imagine getting Damien Rice just to make him do back-up on that :D

overall an 8 definitely seems like a fair score, for the highlights.

the video featurette where she talks about the inspo for each track is so so entertaining. I could watch it on loop. just rambling absolute nonsense :disco:

"I was drawn to it... mainly because of the vine... and the fruit... and the transformation. of life."

"this is where our garden of SIN...suality differs from the garden of Eden. because, in a place where the crea-TOR is the feminine scribe telling the story... the bard... in our book of Genesis, we as women, were encouraged to eat from the tree of knowledge." :disco:

"I was able to include General Joy on the record... because I wrote it."

The downward slide kicked in hard here, but a few tracks are keepers, I do love Sweet The Sting. If only someone at this point had advised her that not every album needs 18 tracks...

It’s a difficult one as with the cd single being pretty much defunct by then (I think) where you could have a 3 or 4 single campaign with b-sides to use up the “surplus” i suppose this was the way to get the tracks out there. If I’d known they’d existed and weren’t on the album I’d have wanted them but yes a shorter album would’ve been stronger. Maybe another Scarlet’s Hidden Treasures type of thing would’ve been the way to go.

Or even just include them as "Bonus tracks". But then we all probably wouldn't even agree on what songs would be the bonus tracks!

I love her to pieces but she was quite insufferable with all the mythology references during this and the ADP eras. It felt like such an excuse to sidestep anything more personal. Which FAIR ENOUGH after giving so much of herself for the whole of her 30s. I just didn't have much interest in it, but that's mostly due to my own IGNORANCE!
