Tuesday feels the urge to book a weekend away

I was trying to enter @Kate ‘s secret word competition, but the twist was you had to make a voice note. The options were given In the style of Who wants to be a millionaire. I kept timing out and losing my round as I didn’t know how to create the voice notes. Then @ButterTart very kindly showed me how to do it.

He was banned but I’ve seen him online so I presume he’s choosing to just lurk at the minute. I saw that he‘s taking part in @Kate‘s secret word game so I presume he’ll be back for that.
 
Hello Mopps. Haven't really got anything to say for myself today but..hello.
 
Moopy I need advice.

We've taken on a new girl for the shop. She's 20 years old and adorable. Really eager to please, wants to come in on her day off to learn how to wrap gifts etc.

Very sweet with customers.

But...she's so slow and useless!! She can't open a tin opener, she can't mix the fudge, she has to be shown how to do everything about 20 times, and then when she does pick things up she's unbelievably slow.

We are a very fast paced shop and it's only going to get faster in a couple of weeks time.

I don't want to get rid of her, so how to I...speed her up? I don't think she's slow because she's lazy, she's just terrified of everything and making mistakes.

I think she needs her confidence built which I'm happy to do, I'm just worried she needs too much babysitting and we don't have the time for it :(

We've got her serving customers and she's good, but again very slow.

We thought we could get her packaging the fudge but she has no clue how, then we thought she could clean up around us, open tins etc, but again, it's like showing a 5 year old.
 
I think the fair thing to do is to ask her to pick up the pace first. Really, sit her down and say "this is fine, this is good, this is getting better but more than anything else, we need you to be quicker". If that's not happening, then she's not suitable for the role, especially for a new, small business.
 
@Rachey I've noticed with our apprentices that the secret seems to be completely over the top praising to build up their confidence, starting a new job is terrifying for some of them. When you want them to try something new make sure to say "Let me show you how to do this then you can have a go at it and I'll watch you do it, I bet you'll be faster than me and Mandy in no time" and with stuff where it doesn't matter if they do it wrong because it can be easily rectified (obviously not the actual fudge-making) make sure you tell them that it doesn't matter because it takes the pressure off them a bit. Praise them for anything they do well, even the smallest things, and I'm sure they'll start speeding up once they're more confident.
 
Sometimes it just takes a little time and patience. I'm the worst for that at work! I've judged people to be useless in the past and actually they're ok. We always have a 3 month trial period at work though, if it doesn't work out we can get rid as such with no hard feelings!

Yeah I think I might do this tomorrow. And I'll give her a few more shifts to see if she picks it up better.

Yeah I did get the impression that constant praising is needed for the younger ones. She's so lovely and so eager to please, I just need her to be quicker. I'll try praising her tomorrow and subtly tell her to speed up a bit and see how we go. I've already told her she doesn't need to make the fudge because she really isn't confident enough. So it is only really simple things I'm asking her to do.

She on a months probation because we need someone good in by peak season. I'm trying really hard not to want to get rid of her.
 
Besides, I think bombing a bit of amphetamine would be better for Rachey's underling than ketamine.

I've spent HOURS on the phone and online today about this.

But the answer (and the advice is ambiguous and contradictory) does seem to be yes. The incubation period is 10 days. So doesn't that mean that although I tested negative today, I could still theoretically test positive until the end of the incubation period?

Eugh. Just realised that annoying itch that has had me standing on my foot with the other is actually athlete's foot. I've never had it before, but in all the years I've been a grotty bastard I think I've done well. Have bought some cream in a tiny tube.
