I do not like this.

I don’t care if someone takes weeks to respond - in fact, I really respect it - and so it’s more that I find it immediately creates a barrier of mistrust.

Stop trying to create privacy and space - we are the internet and we own you now. Grow up!

Anyway, what do you think?

Mine are off. So are notifications for almost every app. My phone doesn't ring, and if I don't have a number saved, there is a 5% at best chance I will answer it.

My phone exists for my convenience, not anyone else's. I genuinely can not fathom any other scenario.

Oh god, it annoys the fuck out of me. There are times I GENUINELY NEED TO KNOW if you've read the text and I also don't mind if you're leaving me on read. I agree...GROW THE FUCK UP.

But yeah, I also have most notifications turned off. I don't for WhatsApp itself, but most groups are muted.

I've also just bought a Brick thingy to see if it helps my focus at work.

They're on and I didn't even realise it was an up for debate thing. Not everything warrants a reply and that's OKAY.

So if someone could please tell my mum she doesn't need to message "Xx" every time we talk so she has the last word please. :)

Whilst on the subject, I've got a friend who I love very much, but often wants a CHAT on WhatsApp when I don't. I quite often just thumb something up or leave it on read and then 10 minutes later you'll get another message. Never anything sarky about leaving her on read, but often something with a question so you feel like you have to respond.

I've tried being subtle about it, and I've also told her I'm never going to listen to a 5 minute voice note and she really shouldn't bother, but she's just not GETTING IT.

Oh CHATTING Aon WhatsApp is the worst. I have one friend who was the worst for it. I can cope with a bit of back and forth, but if it's a full blown conversation, just phone me please. With her I would just phone her after more than a few messages each way.

AND DON'T SEND ME FUCKING VOICE NOTES

I don't even MIND a voice note...but just not over a minute's worth.

SHUT UP.

I've got them turned off for one person who I feel inundates me with messages if I do or don't reply and will message different things on separate platforms within seconds. I think I have Instagram and messenger set to this as a result, which sadly is a blanket mode for all. I generally like knowing if something is read and then sometimes no answer is the answer (therefore not worth overthinking). I loathe people keeping tabs on me, or it feeling like it (I'll tell guys that we're keeping chats to Instagram or WhatsApp now if they go back to messaging "hey" or "how's you" crap on grindr (be direct if you want something people and I'm not starting from scratch repeatedly on grindr). So sometimes having some people on multiple platforms kind of requires these settings tweaks just to maintain your boundaries. A chronic long gap replier? Good, you now know what you're dealing with and it's only you choosing to be stressed or let down by that person if you are continuing to be upset by this. So I have zero issue if I were to sense they've deliberately made themselves more incognito. Maybe it's necessary for them. I personally will avoid answering my phone at all costs - my phone is not your instant access to me.

I also don't mind long gaps. I generally won't send more than 1 unanswered message anyway. I dislike the notion that I have to reply to someone straight away even if my phone is glued to my hand some days. People need to relax and have their own time.

Depends be get times get move on drive nuts takes ever 🤣 i empachant hell life ill pretty much reply in scond on moon not 100% read em only no means poster thanks

Red big ligers roxs

Mine are always on. I hate it when people turn the off as some kind of attempt to appear aloof or whatever.

But some people do have reasons. A friend of mine has been a victim of stalking by some weirdo she once knew. Every couple of years the same person pops up out of nowhere and manages to get her contact details, sometimes posing as other people.

I discovered I could turn them off when I was boo hoo sad over the summer, and I wanted to withdraw from the world.

Then it got on my own tits within about five days and they're BACK ON.

I have receipts off. I am a horrible replier which isn't great, but I don't think there should be an expectation that people reply right away, because everything has become so immediate and I think we should encourage a slower pace.

And yes, it does help when you're going through anxious or sad periods because that often comes through for me in avoidance and procrastination, and it helps me to know that people aren't seeing me read their message and not responding.

I have read receipts on but have notifications off so you never know what I’m gonna do

You encourage this more by showing people you've read their message without replying my love

Group chats to be thrown in a river until I'm interested in replying (normally on a Saturday morning).

Does it work, though? Because I think I'd then turn that expectation in on myself, instead of letting others know I'll respond when I'm ready.

It sometimes settles it in my head that I have a day or so to respond and don't need to have immediate conversations. In theory the blue tick shouldn't matter but idk, there's something that helps me deal with it even if doesn't make sense.

It doesn't help if I've left it weeks and weeks - that's when I start to get anxious about replying/whether it's too late to reply/relationships etc, but that's more on me I think because two days is acceptable in my head whereas two weeks is usually less so.

I've just had a TMI WhatsApp from my mother, and I wish she had taken time to reflect.

I'm unconvinced to be honest. I did turn them off for a while years ago, but it left me feeling as if I had no control of the conversation.

With them being on, I prefer people to know that I've chosen not to respond yet. Or even at all.

I’m not allowed to turn mine off because my mum said so!!!

Don't get me started on the freaks who send emails with read receipts. A great way to be added to my JUNK INBOX going forward.
A read receipt AND high importance, when there's not even an ask in the email!

Turning them off is definitely a sign of either neurodiversity or trauma, I said what I SAID

There are exceptions. Some people use it because of work (WhatsApp for work is entirely other conversation!) and some people have difficult relationships or friendships. But otherwise it’s usually because people are terrible at communicating and need an out. Again I SAID WHAT I SAID!

Oh and just call me GUILTY GERTRUDE for the RAMBLING VOICE NOTES :D

Although only ever for work, or if I’m in the middle of something and need to say something fast

I keep them on, then again I reply fairly quickly, friends are kind of slow to reply, and I don't get many WhatsApp messages at a time (3 at a time is a lot). I might just leave it alone and reply whenever, or give a few emoji reactions. 🤗

In college and uni I was in group chats (prefects were often muted) ; the only one I'm in now is with my sisters. 😊 One of them switches the read receipts off, and we are kind of like 'why' to her, but it's probably about feeling insecure/inadequate. 💭 The 'last seen' thing is perhaps more revealing to contacts in the same time zone, but I don't really care about how people perceive me either way. I literally put 'ժ᥅ꫀꪖꪑﺄᥰဌ' in my description/status for most of the year :D
