TV Ratings 2020

When it comes to Autumn/Winter time are we likely to have much of the same as nothing could be filmed throughout lockdown or are they just holding a lot of things back for later in the year?
 
I think leaving it 16 months after filming it before showing it indicates they had zero faith in it. I don’t think the big studio shows are anywhere near that far in advance normally.

Summer TV is always weaker for sure, but I don’t remember seeing things like so many episodes of The Chase and One Show clogging up the bottom of the charts last year, together with repeats of things like Birds Of A Feather. I do think there is definitely less new TV out there.

And surely it's bound to have an effect on winter TV schedules. Wouldn't things like dramas being filmed now be for autumn/winter scheduling? A lot of Christmas specials are filmed in summer.

But then I guess presumably there are shows which may have been stuck in production or very close to the end of filming which could be finished off relatively quickly?

I do think we'll see the impact of it on the TV schedules for the rest of the year, though.
 
I know that Call The Midwife is usually filmed throughout the Summer, so assume it will not be getting shown at Christmas time or early next year which makes me very :(.

Alan Carr was filming for a Christmas Special last week

They've also started filming a new series of Catchphrase *i think without an audience)

Not that they're great shows just examples of resumed filming on new shows for this year
 
That's good to hear. I'll be interested to see how they manage things like the Alan Carr show. I assume there will be elements of parts of the show which can easily be filmed accommodating social distancing, and others that may be able to be filmed later and pieced together in production.

Rolling in It looks like total garbage, In For a Penny doesn't work in its current format, and Catchphrase needs to go back to two contestants instead of three.

For some reason I seem to have missed season 1 of Line of Duty so was elated to find something new to watch.
 
I got up to series 4 I think. Are they showing all of them NIGHTLY?

The best series is the one with Roz Huntley. I think that was series 4? I’m not too sure. I know season one is getting played every Monday and Tuesday for the next 3 weeks.
 
A record-breaking number of viewers turned to BBC iPlayer in the first half of 2020, with 3.1 billion requests to stream programmes, up by 47% on the previous year.
April-June also marks a new best-ever quarter for iPlayer with 1.6 billion requests, an increase of more than half (59%) on the same quarter last year. Viewing was already up prior to the UK lockdown, with the first quarter 34% higher than the same quarter for 2019.

Hit new BBC Three drama Normal People and the third series of cat and mouse thriller Killing Eve make up all of the top ten most popular episodes so far this year. The latest chapter of Villanelle and Eve’s story tops the list, with episode one achieving 6.95 million requests and series 3 receiving a total of 35.6 million requests so far. It’s followed by the start of Connell and Marianne’s love story in Normal People, with the first episode receiving 5.54 million requests and the 12-part series getting an enormous 54.8 million requests - the highest for a drama series so far this year.

Dan McGolpin, controller of BBC iPlayer, says: “It’s fantastic to see record viewing levels on BBC iPlayer across the first half of 2020, with huge numbers for the brand new and simply unmissable Normal People and for hotly anticipated returners like Killing Eve, This Country and Race Across the World. In a year full of challenges, BBC iPlayer has entertained us, connected us to events like the virtual Glastonbury and the restarted football season, broadened our horizons through Culture in Quarantine, educated our younger family members through BBC Bitesize and all the while kept us informed of the latest news from around the globe.”

Boosted by lockdown viewing, April-June was up 59% on the same quarter last year and 17% on the first three months of this year, with high demand for new dramas like The Salisbury Poisonings and Normal People and the latest series of favourites including The A Word and Killing Eve. Viewers also headed to iPlayer for some reality TV escapism with The Great British Sewing Bee and MasterChef all proving popular in the quarter.

Although Worthy Farm couldn’t be full of thousands of music lovers this year, many relived highlights from the legendary festival with iPlayer’s dedicated Glastonbury channel as part of The Glastonbury Experience. Following a three month hiatus, the return of the world’s oldest sporting competition, The FA Cup, was another highlight as football fans streamed the quarter-final match between Norwich City and Manchester United.

Box sets continued to perform well on iPlayer, from classics like My Family and Waterloo Road to great new shows like I May Destroy You and The Luminaries. In July, BBC iPlayer has continued to add even more new box sets including Emmy nominated Mrs. America, Katy Keene and Disney’s supernatural thriller Fort Salem, alongside archive favourites like ground-breaking sketch comedy The Real McCoy and early 2000s hairdressing hit Cutting It.

I'm assuming those 'what happened next' shows are surplus bits stitched together to make a little schedule filler? I'll watch Joanna Lumley in anything, but those extra bits from her travel shows strung together with another interview with her really are scraping the barrel. Doc Martin and Vera are both repeats as well, I assume...
 
Yes Doc Maetin and Vera are both repeats. Vera has been on every Friday night primetime since lockdown :rolleyes:

I just started season 3 of Marcella which is on Netflix here and was surprised to see it hadn’t aired in the UK yet.

I’m guessing ITV held it back from a summer slot since they have nothing much else in the can for Autumn.

I don’t think I ever got round to watching season 2 of Marcella but vaguely remember enjoying the first. Is it worth a watch?
 
I think vaguely enjoying is what I’d describe it as too. There’s much bette, but right now I think it’s worth sticking with as there’s not much else to watch. Anna Friel is pretty good but Marcella is very unlikeable as a character though.

Also the 2-year gaps between seasons doesn’t help does it. If you do watch I’d see if you can find a recap for series 1. I think I need to find one as season 3 seems to have veered off on a right tangent.

Anna Friel tweeted that this starts in September so there’s time to catch up on ITV player (if it’s there) I guess.

I suppose it had to come to an end when Michelle Keegan packed it in, and it wasn’t exactly setting the ratings alight. Lacey Turner leaving after Season 1, and Michelle Keegan taking over did breathe new life in to the show but I’m not sure how well highly rumoured new army medic Sinead from Corrie would have fared.
 
I seem to remember series 3 did reasonably well in the ratings, but 4 struggled for whatever reason. I didn't watch it, but Mr L did.

New images of BBC One’s forthcoming drama Life have been released, ahead of the six-part series airing this autumn.
Created and written by Mike Bartlett and produced by Drama Republic, Life stars Alison Steadman, Peter Davison, Adrian Lester, Victoria Hamilton, Melissa Johns, Rachael Stirling, Saira Choudhry, Erin Kellyman, Calvin Demba and Joshua James, who all feature in today’s new images.

Victoria Hamilton will reprise her role from Doctor Foster - now going by the name of ‘Belle’, rather than Anna - and seeking to rebuild her life anew.

Adam James will appear later on in the series, reprising his Doctor Foster role as Belle’s now ex-husband Neil. Life also features Elaine Paige and Susannah Fielding in key roles.

Set in Manchester, Life follows the stories of the residents of a large house divided into four flats. As each of the four stories unfold and intertwine in surprising ways, they tell a larger story about what happens when we step out of our personal space and take a closer look into other people’s lives. Life explores love, loss, birth, death, the ordinary, the extraordinary and everything in between.

Gail (Alison Steadman), married to Henry (Peter Davison), is about to celebrate her 70th birthday when a chance encounter throws her whole life into question.

David (Adrian Lester) is happily married to Kelly (Rachael Stirling), but is conflicted by temptation when he meets the impulsive Saira (Saira Choudhry) on holiday.

Pilates teacher Belle’s (Victoria Hamilton) neatly ordered life is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of her chaotic 15 year-old niece Maya (Erin Kellyman).

Heavily pregnant Hannah (Melissa Johns) - who is happily coupled up with safe and stable Liam (Joshua James) - has her plans upended by the return of Andy (Calvin Demba), with whom she had a passionate one-night stand nine months previously...

And it is a permanent and heavily plugged fixture on All 4 anyway. The thought of dipping back into that one now doesn't really appeal.

Strictly should be starting next month, no? It will be nice to see half decent viewing figures at the top again. Strictly usually gets around 10m per week?
 
Haven't they said it's going to be shorter than usual? Last year the launch show was 7th Sept, with the series proper on 21st September. So I guess it's a question of how much shorter. Perhaps we'll get a launch show in by the end of the month, but I'd be surprised if the competition starts before October.

It isn't due back until mid to late October this year I believe. Celeb announcements are apparently imminent though. :disco:
