TV Ratings 2022

We seem to have had an influx of dramas over the past month or so and none of them seem to be setting the ratings chart on fire.
 
And because the top 50 is published for the commercial channels individually (but not for the BBC) these are other figures for Queen related coverage

1.336m ITV News: Queen Elizabeth II: Return To The Palace

Yes, I expected better for most of them. Pleased to see GBBO open to decent figures, anyway.

My main takeaway from this that most people were crying out for something other than Queen related misery. I bet streaming services had their best week since peak lockdown.

I think that makes sense - there's little more comfort viewing that an unchallenging comedy you know well. It's why I'll often watch an episode or two of something like Frasier or Gavin and Stacey before bed.

FAKE NEWS

Looking at the BBC One schedule from the 18th, it looks as though both the minute's silence AND a 'the eve of the statty fune' show both had the main title of 'The State Funeral Of HM Queen Elizabeth II'. Which is a bit weird, isn't it. But then so is having a monarchy
 
I'm flagellating as I type. The show in question was on Sunday at 7pm.

I was expecting a lower figure, but not THAT low. I let my GLEE run away with me.

Gogglebox up 1.6%
BBC News at Six down 4.9%
 
A lot of those ratings drop offs will be because of the increased competition from streamers and changing viewing habits - until you get to the Antiques Roadshow, where that 14.3% will be entirely viewers who've died
 
Maybe now Netflix have relented (and can spin some decent PR out of their hits), the others might relent too. I'd be very curious to know how those Disney shows are doing.
 
Amazon always looks like it’s the most dire out of the big ones.

Interesting that both the big two Sunday night dramas (even that James Nesbitt one) seem to have increased on last week too. It will be the season I suppose.

The shit I've had to sit through ('watching' would be pushing it) because Mr L seems to be obsessed with them. They are only ever of interest for 'isn't that her who played xx in Wentworth/Neighbours/Home and Away?' appeal.

Oh no The Voice didn’t make the Top 20. The ratings are getting X Factor bad.
 
The Masked Dancer needs be put out of its misery also. The Masked Singer does it so much better.
 
The Voice would be #21 with 3.158m. The Masked Dancer had 2.258m, although that's excluding non-TV viewing - the Barb website only includes that for the top 50 shows. So all I can say for definite is that it had less than the #50 show, which was 2.823m. And I suspect some way below that, as for most shows it's a small figure. The Voice (which seems a reasonable comparison) added less than 40k from it. So I suspect 2.3m for The Masked Dancer is a reasonable guess.

It probably does need putting out of its misery, but I wonder if the deal is tied up with The Masked Singer?

And either way, ITV seem to be fresh out of ideas what to do with Primetime Saturday entertainment shows, looking at how they hang on to tired shows like The Voice and Dancing On Ice.

I do agree to a point but other than Strictly what does the BBC have to offer that gets high ratings? Not sure how well I Can See Your Voice does? I LOVE The Hit List but that is usually just scraping in at the bottom of the ratings list. Blankety Blank is terrible, and The Wheel seems to have been moved to a much earlier slot? I think Saturday night television across the board is the issue.
 
Yes, it's certainly true that the BBC is struggling as well, Strictly aside. Shows like I Can See Your Voice and The Greatest Dancer are just variations on a theme, seemingly with ever diminishing returns. Even if Blankety Blank is a little more more successful, it's hardly creative, is it? And The Wheel is just a vehicle for Michael McIntyre, just like ITV will stick Ant and Dec on any old shit and hope it's a hit. There seems to be a real dearth of ideas across the board in terms of light entertainment.
 
Still, we've got the Gladiators reboot to look forward to at least.
 
I’m not really sure what else they can offer though to be honest. They possibly need to start moving other listings to prime time Saturday night tv and get rid of the same old same old.
