TV Ratings 2023 (1 Viewer)

I'm A Celebrity again just over 2m down on its first full week last year.

I’m surprised it was still the most watched programme of that week, even if only slightly. With all the press headlines surrounding the drop in ratings you would assume it had dropped out completely. :D

Amazing rating for Doctor Who :disco:
And I think it could end up a fair bit higher again. That 7 day figure is only slightly below the first episode Planet Earth got after 7 days, and as I posted above, that ended up at 10.6m after 28 days. And this similarly did very well on catch up.

Hopefully the BBC will publish the full figures at some point. I think it's likely that they will, given that they often do an end of year round up of iPlayer figures, and I'm sure through will want to champion it, given the global appeal of the show and the deal with Disney.

I saw a note somewhere the Squid Game The Challenge has been massive for Netflix... how is that streaming providers are compared for viewing figures seeing as they don't have live showings?

@A Lolly Dolly Christmas is it possible to make anything from the Netflix data dump?

Releasing is as “hours viewed” seems a bit “we’re not as popular as you might think”
Didn't know anything about it until you posted, and I've just googled it. I'll have a look later.

I'll do the chart for last week later as well. Barb only updated yesterday afternoon, but I was otherwise engaged yesterday evening.

That's the Strictly result show where there WAS no result, so presumably why 2m fewer people decided to watch.

It will be interesting to see if ITV try any more political stunt casting after the relatively disappointing rating figures of the series this year.

Last year, every individual episode of the corresponding week had higher ratings than Strictly - the highest a million more. This year every episode was ranked below it.

Last year was the first IACGMOOH back in Australia after a couple of boring years in Wales. I think that is what made the figures bigger last year.

The average figure was bigger last year than the second year in Wales. But smaller than the first year.

Yes, but the first year we were still very restricted with our movements and ready to go in to another lockdown due to the pandemic, and it was advertised as something new and exciting as it was in Wales and vice versa when it returned to Australia.

But my point is that last year wasn't a huge peak that it's fallen from this year. It was just bigger than the year before.

If you look at the average rating per episode so far this year, with the exception of that second Welsh year, it's the lowest rating series since 2007. And that's without considering that the audience is continuing to fall.

Obviously it's still a successful programme - I'm just interested to see how ITV respond to those falling figures. The purpose of stunt casting was presumably to bolster ratings, not see them fall.

Sorry I don’t follow your first paragraph?

Looking at average viewing figures they very much vary year on year. The peak from 2018 of 12 million viewers would be hard to meet in a 2023 figure, no? Viewing figures have dropped on the whole quite dramatically from then. Would the audience share year on year not make a more accurate comparison?

I very much hope they do stop putting in politicians. They bore me to tears.

Of course figures are down generally - it's done remarkably well to hold up as well is it has. If you look at the bigger picture, it's still holding up to the figures it was getting two decades ago. Look at how the soaps for example have declined over the same period.

I don't have audience shares for previous years. If you look at the week for the chart above, Strictly had 50.6%, and IACGMOOH is averaging 40.8% (and Doctor Who 41.6%).

I guess more has been heralded about it 'flopping' this year because it has fallen hard year on year - it's down 20 - 25% since last year, and although viewing figures have fallen a lot over the years, they aren't that far down year on year. And because now it's also fallen behind Strictly and those two are such obvious competitors. Strictly is only very narrowly down on last year - I think about 2%, which it must be quite likely it will make up when the viewing figures for the semi final and final are counted.

I would assume that IACGMOOH always had a lower audience share than Strictly on live viewing simply because Strictly is prime time tv on a Saturday night but we don’t have that info from previous years

Whilst searching for info on audience shares for previous years I came across quite a few articles from the 2021 series regarding how viewing figures had dropped 4 million on the previous year, so it is very much a rewrite of that. Obviously very little on how the 2022 show was UP 3 million on the previous year. :D

So in 2020 with us being in a semi lockdown state ratings soared, in 2021 they dropped again when we were allowed more freedom (which most television programmes did when comparing to lockdown figures generally). In 2022 with the much sought after return to Australia ratings soared, and this year I think it has basically followed the trajectory of what would have happened had we never heard of covid. I am confident in saying next year won’t have as big a drop and also semi confident in saying with other much advertised tweaks ratings will go up again in future series as they have fluctuated year on year since the series started over 20 years ago.

I wonder if they attributed too much of the relative success of 2022 to the inclusion of someone as divisive as Matt Hancock, and then felt compelled to do the same with Farage this year, whereas in fact 2022 was probably always likely to do well, because people wanted it back in Australia, after that second Wales series which was particularly poorly received.

I agree that the COVID years have made it difficult to trace a pattern over the last few years particularly. But it'll be interesting to see how ITV respond to the dip this year.

I also wonder if there is some fatigue with Ant & Dec setting in, as Saturday Night Takeaway also had its poorest year since launch this year, and Limitless Win was below 4m for most of its run.

If the £1.5 million fee for Nigel Farage is correct then I am glad the series flopped. For him to then reach Top 3 it really makes me question the British public. WHY!?

Interestingly the highest average viewers on any series was the 2018 season with Dec and Holly Willoughby presenting. It was the season that Harry Redknapp won which is looked back on fondly but I don’t see any massive names that would have piqued interest initially?

I still remain surprised that anyone was surprised that Farage made top three :D

As far as who the names are each year is concerned, I don't think how big the names are matters so much, really. Obviously it helps get headlines and there will always be people moaning about how many of them they have never heard of, but isn't what matters more how the people relate to each other?

I thought he was universally hated. Obviously not. I’m assuming if it was a vote to evict scenario he would have left earlier?

I would say in the long run it doesn’t really matter, but it would probably help boost viewers on the launch episode then hope they become invested. I would say most who don’t watch at the start are unlikely to watch part way through.

I've separated the final of IACGMOOH as it makes for easier comparison with last year when I also did it. 3.443m down on the final last year.

Over the whole series it averaged 8.029m, down from 10.94m last year.

Not quite as big a fall as I was expecting from the previous week. Still down considerably though.

Shame Doctor Who couldn't have stayed over 7m, but to drop only 10% over the course of the three episodes can only be seen as strong, I'd have thought. And the lowest episode of these three still had over 1.5m more than the highest of the 2022 specials - and very nearly double the lowest of the three last year.

That’s pretty good for a Netflix film to be on there right?
Yes, it has rarely happened since Netflix started reporting to Barb last year. Without checking back, the only other I can remember is Glass Onion.

Although 3.6m doesn't seem that much to get excited about considering pretty much the whole of the year for EastEnders has been building up to it, I suspect that figure will be warmly received. It'll be interesting to see how they level out when I do the chart for the whole week.

It's a shame EE wasn't higher, but I wonder if the particularly late timeslot stopped it from getting more.

To compare to last year

The King - down 3.22m
Strictly - down 0.14m
Ghosts - up 0.48m
Call The Midwife - down 0.09m
EastEnders - up 0.43m
Coronation Street - down 0.25m

For comparison the last Doctor Who Christmas special got an overnight rating of 5.7m, but that was in 2017 so I think live viewing will have declined across the board since then. During the Jodie Whittaker era they did New Year's Day specials instead, and the last one of those (2022) got 3.21m - I'm not sure how Christmas Day and NYD ratings tend to compare to each other though.

Yes, there's no way the time slot won't have affected EE.

EastEnders usually does better on catch up than the other soaps anyway. Factor in Christmas Day, and that if it was broadcast later, there's less time for what the industry calls VOSDAL (viewing on same day as live), which also appears in the overnights. That episode will get a solid bump when the 7 day figures are in.

To further compare, EastEnders got 6.3m and Coronation Street 5.1m that year.

As well as the TV viewing figures having declined in those 6 years, far more people use iPlayer now than they did in 2017 - and particularly for shows like Doctor Who which we know has recently done very well on it. I'd be fairly sure it'll end up around 7m after 7 days, and who knows after that?

It still baffles me how Chibnall decided to do New Year specials instead of Christmas ones. He really made poor decision after poor decision during his run…

A season with all one parters and no returning characters, thereby losing the tradition of cliffhangers and build up of ‘who is the baddie gonna be’?

The opposite with a season made up of just one story… too far the other way.

Terrible casting almost without exception.

Bad decision making in terms of when specials should be.

Thank God for RTD’s return.

Considering the massive hoo-har about Eastenders that was literally EVERYWHERE, I am shocked at how low those ratings are. I had no idea the soaps were dropping off so dramatically overall. The ITV ones are truly appalling surely?

But that's largely where TV viewing is at now, particularly on overnight data. Corrie is only 0.25m down on last year, which I think is probably in line with its general weekly decline over the year.

The soaps have been in decline for several years now. If anything EastEnders went into decline before Emmerdale and Corrie, but does seem to have levelled out and I think perhaps increased slightly over the last year. But Emmerdale and Coronation Street both still seem to be losing viewers.

I think I mentioned in another thread that it was strange that Corrie and Emmerdale had only 30 minute Christmas Day episodes and no story arcs leading up to the main day? We watched Eastenders earlier and it was an INCREDIBLE episode, but very strange that the other ITV soaps didn’t try to compete, surely? Unheard of even.
