TV Ratings 2024

Do you have every week logged into an Excel workbook? Would be interesting to put it into chatgpt and see what analysis and trends it can find.
Of course I don't. I shall do it with parchment, quill and abacus.

I would say this series of BGT felt, anecdotally, like a solid, if unremarkable one akin to The Apprentice. If they can find something that just settles into a pattern of pulling in 5 - 6 million viewers, that will do for ITV (it also benefitted the soaps having them back in their traditional 30-minute slots, which should certainly be something for them to think on).

I'm pretty sure I'd read that because they won't have Saturday Night Takeaway next year, ITV's current plan is to stretch BGT across those weeks as well. Rather than do more auditions, though, the obvious move would be to stretch the semis across five weeks instead of one.

Not all episodes of Love Island featured in the top 50 shows, and then there was the simulcast on ITV1 and 2 to consider as well, which I'll do a little later as busy now. I think it's likely it will sneak into the bottom of the chart, though.

All episodes of Love Island did make the top 50 except the launch show - no doubt because that was split between ITV1 and ITV2. Unfortunately Thinkbox (which breaks commercial stations by station) hasn't updated yet, so I can't make an estimate based on the info yet.

Without that launch episode, it has an average of 2.497m, so presumably the average with it will be a little higher than that.

Realised today I didn't do last week - I think it was a couple of days late. I originally checked but then forgot all about it. Probably wouldn't have got away with it if @Rita was around. Where IS she?

She’s been away for 3 weeks!

It still amazes me how lazy viewers are. Look at EastEnders and Sewing Bee losing a quarter of their audiences because they were shunted to different channels for episodes. Despite being available on iPlayer, people just don't bother. EastEnders wouldn't have been in the top 20 had one of its episodes not been on BBC1 to keep it reasonably buoyant.

To be honest, much as I enjoy Sewing Bee, even I couldn't be bothered to chase around after it moved day and channel. Our series link failed as a result and we just skipped the episode.

I don't have it on series link and never watch it live, so it makes no difference to me. I rarely watch it on the day it's broadcast (Tuesday?), but invariably pick it up later in the week.

It's moved to Wednesdays now, and it looks like they're keeping it there (albeit it's on BBC2 this week and BBC1 next). I get that sport is going to disrupt the schedules and everything is available on-demand so it really shouldn't matter...but evidently, it does, as you've highlighted, so I don't really get why the BBC keep blindly walking into these situations knowing how much of an audience they stand to lose.

With soaps it's unavoidable because they're on all year round, but in the case of something like Sewing Bee, why not just start the series several weeks earlier so that it doesn't clash at all?

EastEnders rebounds slightly, no doubt due to one more of its episodes being on BBC1 this week - although it would seem more viewers were up to speed, as there's only a little difference between the lowest BBC1 episode (3.018m) and the highest BBC2 one (2.937m). Last week there was nearly a 0.9m difference.

Sewing Bee was back on BBC1 though - but it was directly against one of the England matches on ITV, as was one of the EastEnders episodes.

All episodes of Love Island returned to the chart this week, with an average of 2.333m.

Because there was probably something else in its slot then? I imagine there are unmovable events dotted around the year (mostly BLOODY SPORT) and so many long runs of different series to be scheduled across it that it just make this kind of scheduling nonsense unavoidable? Otherwise it wouldn't happen, would it

And if Sewing Bee had come earlier to protect it from this situation, then it would have meant the same fate instead for Race Across The World / Interior Design Masters / The Apprentice / The Traitors / etc instead

I guess the alternative would be to have some/more of these fact-ents-competition shows running at the same time as each other, which seems a bigger risk when they probably all benefit from having their moment.

Remember that these are only the 7 day ratings. These days, the BBC is more interested in 28 day ratings and beyond, especially as they don't have to worry about spend from advertisers. Indeed, the BBC have access to viewing figures from BARB that run to many months after their first TV showing.

Space Babies, the first episode of the most recent series of Doctor Who, is now up to well over 6 million viewers.

That's true, but it's worth remembering that catch up viewing doesn't affect all programmes equally. Drama series and one off dramas tend to do a lot better than soaps, entertainment and event shows. So it still matters (and as time goes on, increasingly so) but certainly isn't everything.

I get all of that (although, checking the schedules, Sewing Bee could only have started a week earlier in the same slot due to BLOODY EUROVISION). But it's a rather depressing indictment of where we're at if everything with a remotely similar audience has to be stripped across the entire year, and moving one means moving everything else so there's no overlap whatsoever.

It's interesting (to me, at least) that of all the soaps that got moved around during the Euros, EastEnders seemed to suffer the most. In principle, their schedule changed the least because they already have an established Mon - Thurs iPlayer drop. Yet, Emmerdale, in particular, held up remarkably well despite being shunted around (some episodes were cancelled last minute because matches went to extra time) and releasing to ITVX early.

High Country feels like a drama bought in for the BBC4 international slot and upgraded to BBC1, so that is a very decent number.

How is the second season of Changing Ends doing on ITV1?

Yes pleasantly surprised High County is making the chart

That's a chunk lower than other finals/big matches for the England men's team, right?

Are we all just a BIT TOO USED to England doing well (but not winning) now?

Maybe, the 2021 final got 29m (!), then the World Cup quarter-final got 16m.

Wow Love Island is SLAYING again. I have missed most of it due to being out of the country but GO GIRL GO. :disco:

I've stopped watching until I can just skip through it all for the final, but it's been a very good season. Also, if you've been away - great to have you back!

Just on the subject of DR WHO in the Strictly thread it got me wondering if the series ratings picked up as they went on?

Every episode has got to over 4 million viewers in terms of overall reach, which for the time of year it was broadcast is decent.

Plus every episode will continue to attract viewers on the iPlayer until kingdom come. Space Babies is at well over 6 million viewers now, for example.

Most episodes finished well within the top 20 for the week (different from Lolly's chart as it includes multiple episodes of the same programme).

Was it broadcasted at a different time of year from usual then? It is a particularly low figure for such a well established probably not particularly cheap to make tv programme no matter what way you dress it up, surely?

If BGT, The Apprentice, Love Island and many, many more programmes are measured against their previous success I would say Dr Who is fair game too

We've never had a run that starts mid-May before.

The last regular run of episodes was in November / December 2021.

You have to go back seven years to 2017 for the last time that Doctor Who aired in a similar time of year.
