When is the next general election due?
The Conservative party will need something of a miracle to achieve a majority in the next one. But you never know with this lot.
 
Liz Truss will make a glorious leader and consign the Tories to the bin. Bring the mad cunt on.
 
Dorries would be given the boot by Truss. Dorries is only there because she is Team Boris and will do what she's told, hence her witless floundering every time she's asked to go beyond the headline.
 
Truss would do quite badly - I know we have no time for him on here, rightly, but there is clearly a Boris charm (or at least there was, it has worn almost entirely thin) that appealed to enough voters to build a solid electoral coalition (the Tories don’t poll 44% by sheer fluke, not in this day and age). Truss has none of that - she would absolutely be the choice of the party base - another IDS.

The problem for the Tories is the extent to which the parliamentary party has been purged of moderate and serious voices - as the importance of Brexit wanes (if not the effects), the cost of living soars, and they cling with increasing desperation to culture wars, they are going to need a reset before too long but they have almost nowhere to turn.

The repealing of the FTPA means the next election could even be as late as January 2025 (!) now. I'd guess it will likeliest be in 2024, but they'll probably inevitably end up wanting to stretch out the parliament as long as possible until the supply pressures driving inflation have faded and the economy is on an upswing again. Which of course, could all easily be complicated if another COVID variant comes up in the next year or two, which feels likely. I'd guess somewhere between May and September 2024 for the general election (or in the winter if they really want to try crushing turnout down).

I also think it's pretty likely Boris will still be the leader going into it (which frankly is fine by me - the public's made up their mind on him, and Tory MPs are kidding themselves on that one). Though the thing that makes me most uneasy is that what's good for Biden is probably also what's good for Boris economically (and vice versa), and they're now probably on a similar electoral timetable. The thing that makes a Democratic win most likely in 2024 makes a Tory win more likely...and the thing that makes a Tory win much less likely makes a Democratic one much less likely too.
 
I hate that this is our Prime Minister so much. I mean, I grew up with Thatcher so I've never had high expectations but most of our PMs have been tolerable, largely due to possessing some competence. Major was measured and sincere - his role in securing the Good Friday Agreement always bulks large when I think of him and he was a sensible voice against Brexit (for all the good it did, mind you). Apart from that, they've been largely decent communicators. But Johnson is such an incompetent, dim-witted, self-serving, venal arsehole that its just fucking embarrassing.

I love how Johnson is just making revisionism a thing. You're basically complimenting John Major and overlooking the UTTER incompetence of Cameron and May, but I'm TOTALLY here for it- he is worse than the lot :D
 
He’s probably having the time of his life right now. Being a wartime Prime Minister is the culmination of all his Churchill-wanking fantasies.
 
Obviously lying to parliament and committing a criminal offence should be a resigning issue, but certainly WON’T BE.

Cameron and May could at least give the appearance of competence - Cameron was a half-decent public speaker. May was hampered by her own party and does much better in the back benches. But the reality is that anyone looks good next to this bin bag full of custard and cat hair.

I get the sense that Sunak cares less than Johnson, and will happily fuck off and be rich in America and leave British politics behind. Resigning would be a massive fuck you to Johnson and could just tip Johnson's position into being untenable (amongst the people that can change anything)
 
I’m surprised about Sunak - the details we’ve had of his breach so far sounded weak. There must be something more. (Delighted though after his pathetic Spring Statement).

I kinda wish it was just Johnson though - I’d rather the focus solely on him.

He's way too thin skinned for politics. I think the last fortnight has made him realise. I'm sure there's plenty of damaging stuff we don't know about him yet too.

That might have been the deal - Johnson will accept the fine as long as Sunak gets one too. Sunak goes and therefore takes the majority of the flak.
 
Sunak going doesn't help Johnson one bit after everything he's said at the despatch box.

His only defence can be "I don't agree with the police's judgement and they're wrong" and I don't think even he would dare do that.
