The problem with people this deeply entrenched in their views is that they will never admit that they were wrong.

It will take the dying out of these dinosaurs, younger generations coming up and (hopefully one day) a progressive coalition in power before the UK(or whatever is left of it by that point) begins to have a more grown up, cooperative and less hostile relationship with its neighbours. And that is before the campaign and the discussion opens up for rejoining EU, or even "just" the single market and or the customs union which is many many years away(and who knows how many rights this current government will have stripped away before then).

It really is a tragic state of affairs.

By all accounts those who’ve reached voting age since Brexit have been overwhelmingly left wing. I can’t imagine that this government has done anything to convert people into Tories since the last election, and the red wall looks set to rebuild itself if things stay as they are.

Left parties need to shift focus to the ”right” kind of social issues. Bring it back to classic fiscal/money issues, working force rights and the likes. Ultimately, people care more about improving their own economy than anything else.

The damage of Brexit is emerging thick and fast, and as much as this government tries to sell us the idea of trade deals with India and Australia, geography is destiny. The day will come that the economic arguments in favour of trading in a single market with the UK's closest neighbours will have their Emancipation of Mimi era.

Of course, @RaspberrySwirl and I will be shaking and crying over the idea of the UK being admitted only into the Single Market & Customs Union as an associate member and rule-taker (France will never the UK back in, save a massive crisis). It will be poetic justice to actually become an EU vassal state like Montenegro or Kosovo.

I am minded to think that a UK attempting to return with a 'whoops lol silly us' and subsequently more accommodating outlook would be welcomed back (including by France). We have seen that being one of the major economies of the EU, and leaving the block, isn't enough for the loss to be mourned, but if the EU does look to cooperate more closely militarily and diplomatically (particularly if NATO continues its decline) then it would be pragmatic to have the UK (which is Europe's only real military power, along with France) as part of that.

But it would require an entire sub-culture of British politics to die out first (and taking the Euro and possibly Schengen as @RaspberrySwirl notes).

I don’t think most people are educated enough and attuned enough to understand the nuances of Brexit and trade deals and immigration to fully understand the impact of Brexit. They’re told that it’s now harder to come into the country for Polish people. Everything else is just white noise

Nothing will come of Brexit. People will continue to suffer or be impacted by it, but those of us able to understand will just stay frustrated, and those who aren’t won’t make the connection. It’s too inconvenient for them.
