I feel the position of the French government is good riddance. With Macron in power and Germany in transition, France really is the leader of Europe for the next half decade or more. Why bring the UK back into the fold to slow things down when France could effectively lead a future federal Europe? Geo-strategically, a dismembered UK is as attractive as an allied (but fundamentally untrustworthy and naturally Eurosceptic) UK.

There's no point in the short term, agreed, but in the medium to long term there may be but, as you say, it would require a very different outlook from the UK - one that may never arrive even with age / demographic changes. You never know though, we could end up with an incredibly Europhile populace in 10-15 years. :hostage:

Let’s not get too unrealistic. Macron could as well lose the coming election and the whole thing (EU) could disintegrate soon.

To whom? Pécresse? She would continue France's pro-EU policy in any case. There is no way Zemmour or Le Pen will be elected. If Le Pen couldn't come close after 2015-16, she never will.

Does Ireland want Schengen? I assume a re-joined UK (or an Independent Scotland for that matter) would follow Ireland on that.

Yes, the beauty of the French presidential system seems to be that even if you’re not that popular, you’ll probably end up in the run-off against a political nut job and win nonetheless.

Oh I just CAN’T with a Le Pen v Macron second round AGAIN.

Babes, we (the left, I mean) can’t with that match-up either. I mean it’s going to be SUCH a hard task to actually find the motivation to vote for Macron again 😮‍💨

I always get a bit of a semi on at the idea of Scotland fucking Westminster off and joining some sort of Nordic council, must be something in my Celtic blood.

And England comes running expecting some sort of premium VIP trade relationship and said Nordic Council is like

As a republican I am hopeful about how long the entire thing can carry on once HMQ dies. They’re not exactly a compelling bunch (and oh so mishap prone).

I think her personal popularity cannot be overstated. Given how young she was when she came to the throne, a fighting majority of gammons grew up knowing only her as monarch. I don't think that loyalty will automatically shift.

Agreed - her polling popularity is miles and miles ahead of the rest of them. William and Kate are up there after her, but the monarchy has the awks situation of Charles being in the way!

Staunch monarchists (of whom there are many in England) would happily accept Charles as a king in the knowledge he'll not be around long. Most of them are chomping at the bit for Wills & Kate.

I mean the dedicated flag shaggers are always going to be just that, I think once ARE LIZZEH croaks it the middle of the road people who just kind of 'accept' the Royals are probably going to be less bothered about supporting a monarchy than they are now.

To be fair, I'm pretty ambivalent about them, I don't mind them existing as a tourist attraction, but I wouldn't really stand in the way of becoming a republic either.

I'm always surprised at how even moderate / Left-leaning Brits can't help but stan the monarchy, to the point of being irrational. My sister who is an always-voted-Labour Remainer loves the Royals, and thinks Meghan should have "just got on with it".

I think there's a bit of both - there's lots of people for whom there is affection for the Queen but, ambivalence towards the monarchy, so I thoroughly expect its overall popularity / approval to slide significantly when she passes. Whether that means it disappears altogether, I am sceptical - that's revolutionary (figuratively and literally) and it isn't something we have gone in for much post-Cromwell, albeit the warning signs have flashed red before (particularly in 1997). Never say never - demographic change is going to tilt this country in a different direction at some point.

Well yes, except if he goes on as long as his parents did, Wills and Kate will be in their 60s at that point and people will have moved on to their children.

I agree with @octophone in that I don't think the loyalty will automatically shift. And at the very least I think we will be able to have conversations about the future of the monarchy that we haven't had for decades.

We will have two queens in a row here (after the reigning king) so the royals are about to get even more popular in the following decades/century.

I only have time for Queen Maggie. how is she going to buy fags if she loses the apanage?

the next generation can go fuck itself (even though we all know future Queen Mary is going to serve)
